Bulldogs see improvements as season ends at 3-5

IOWA FALLS – It showed just how much the Bulldog football team has grown this season in their 28-18 Class 2A playoff loss to Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday, Oct. 16.

Just four weeks previous, coach Andy Bruemmer’s team dropped a 39-20 district game to the Cadets.

It didn’t look like the same team.

“We kept fighting and fighting,” Bruemmer said, “and the guys, that’s what I love about this team, I don’t think I saw them give up all year. They just kept going and tonight we were down two touchdowns and we had a dive at the end to get the score.”

Cougars rout Meskwaki in first round

ACKLEY – Playing without its prolific quarterback, Meskwaki seemed helpless at the hands of AGWSR in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs on Friday, Oct. 16.

Jaden Penning rushed for four touchdowns – three in the first quarter alone – and added another 63-yard touchdown catch from Bo Gerbracht which was also in the first 12 minutes as the Cougars steamrolled their way to a 74-14 win over the Warriors.

Warhawks miss in defense of TIC title

OSAGE – In an attempt to defend its Top of Iowa Conference title, the circumstances were much different than 2020 for the West Fork cross country team.

The Warhawks lost one to graduation, one to another sport and lost the venue it regularly ran the meet in due to COVID-19 concerns.

Plus, coach Mark Twedt’s top finisher, Cail Weaver, on Thursday, Oct. 15 rolled his ankle on the second lap around Osage’s Mitchell County Nature Reserve.

Meyer claims NCC title; Maas runner-up with new PR

CLEAR LAKE – The first time Ellie Meyer of Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR and the Bulldogs’ Lydia Maas raced, they finished one-two, but on Tuesday, Oct. 13, this meant a little bit more to the both of them.

Meyer claimed the North Central Conference girls’ varsity title at Clear Lake’s Veterans Memorial Golf Course with a personal best of 18 minutes, 17.57 seconds and Maas also broke 19 minutes by going 18:56.70 as runner-up.

Regional match tune-up has West Fork coach, players motivated

SHEFFIELD – Even though the West Fork volleyball team faced its Class 2A regional first round opponent exactly a week before the post-season, the battery on the Warhawks’ recording of said match died about 30 seconds into it.

So, when she was notified of that while talking about playing Belmond-Klemme again, Warhawk first-year coach Hannah Vaughan had to back pedal.

West Fork wraps up regular season with a win over North Butler

ROCKWELL — The West Fork Warhawk football team wrapped up the regular season in style Friday night with a 35-22 Class A, District 3 win over the North Butler Bearcats.

This was the first varsity football game played at the Rockwell facility since 2009.

West Fork finished in a three-way tie with Lake Mills and Mason City Newman Catholic in the district standings with a 3-2 record and improved its overall mark to 4-2.

The Bearcats went 1-4 in district competition and are 3-4 overall.

Bulldogs fall in defensive contest; draw road game at IF-A

HAMPTON – Two solid defenses clashed in Hampton on Friday, Oct. 9 and visiting Forest City came away the 27-13 victor for it.

Two scores in this game resulted from interception returns and a third nearly was brought back all the way for another, but ended up reaching the end zone a play later as the Bulldogs finished the regular season 3-4.

NICL West clash cause to look toward regional assignments

ACKLEY – If the Thursday, Oct. 8 NICL West clash between visiting Grundy Center against AGWSR is any indication how the post-season will go, there is reason for both teams to be ecstatic.

It was a fiery atmosphere as Grundy Center came out with a 3-1 win over the Cougars.

Both teams found out their regional bracket assignments earlier that day before the Spartans came in for the 25-22, 16-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over the Cougars.

Bulldogs drop 3-1 match to Gaels

HAMPTON – Although it was a more inspired effort than their previous home match, the Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 North Central Conference contest against Fort Dodge St. Edmond in the Gaels’ first action in about two weeks.

Due to exposure to COVID-19, the match was postponed from its previous date of Thursday, Sept. 24, but St. Edmond didn’t look worse for wear in the 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17 win on Monday, Oct. 5.

“Our effort was better last night,” coach Sarah Miller said. “We had a lot of communication errors that should not have happened.”

Bulldogs even record at Roland-Story

STORY CITY — Scores on the ground, in the air and on special teams as well as forcing seven turnovers helped the Bulldog football team to a 21-0 road win against Roland-Story on Friday, Oct. 2.

Coach Andy Bruemmer’s squad improved to 3-3 and will go for a winning record for the first time since 2015 when the Bulldogs last made the playoffs.

“We played really well,” Bruemmer said. “They finished some drives, they made some big plays when we needed big plays. I can’t say enough about our defensive front, we had a shutout.
