Panthers rough up Cougars 66-16 on homecoming

ACKLEY – A night that began with celebration ended with a different tone for the Cougars on Sept. 2 for their Homecoming game.

Tripoli (5-1) was in town for a pivotal battle in the Class 8-Player District 2 race. The Panthers left with a two-game lead over the Cougars (3-3) with a 66-16 win.

“In summary, Homecoming won,” Cougars coach James Koop said. “They were what we expected, and they came here to win a football game.”

Tripoli set the tone for the night early by running back the opening kick within the five-yard line.

Bulldogs’ Maas runs second-best time at Maynes Grove

HAMPTON – Looking at Bulldog freshman Lydia Maas run, you’d think she is a seasoned veteran who has been part of running clubs for years.

Not so.

The winner of the 2020 Bulldog Invitational, who also happens to have run the second-best varsity girls’ time ever on the course, says she just started running seriously in the seventh grade.

“So, I started in seventh grade, in middle school,” Maas said, “but before that I never really ran a lot. I always kind of liked it when we’d play tag at recess and stuff.

Warhawks race to first at Maynes Grove

HAMPTON – Ask West Fork senior Jakob Washington how his ankle feels, he’s still feeling a little pain from an injury in the off-season.

However, he sure looks like he is in good form with a fifth-place overall finish and led the Warhawks to the boys’ team title at the 2020 Bulldog Invitational at Maynes Grove on Thursday, Oct. 1.

“I’m feeling a little bit of pain,” Washington said, “especially on the courses that have more hills and put more pressure on my ankle, but I think my confidence is going up, my ankle is getting back. I’m starting to get in shape again.

Cougars beat IF-A

IOWA FALLS – Brynn Smith posted a match-high 20 kills in a 3-1 non-conference win for AGWSR over Hardin County rival Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Taylor Sperfslage added 13 more kills as the Cougars improved to 5-8 overall with the signature victory over a bigger school, 25-15-, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22.

MaKenna Kuper, who added seven kills, led the way with two blocks. Natalie Gerstein, who distributed 39 of the team’s 51 assists, also was 23-of-23 serving with a pair of aces.

Libero Haleigh Homeyer tallied a team-high 23 digs for coach Jill Smith’s team.

Bulldog seniors make final bow against GHV

HAMPTON – Sarah Miller was a bit emotional talking about the six seniors she has coached for the past seven years.

The Bulldogs who took to the court on Senior Night was with Miller when she coached the Middle School program all the way to the Tuesday, Sept. 29 non-conference match against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.

It didn’t end the way Miller and the Bulldogs wanted to in a 3-0 sweep by the Cardinals.

Bulldogs make history at Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE – The Bulldog football team put a stamp on the 2020 season by posting their first road win against Clear Lake in 30 years.

Coach Andy Bruemmer’s team got out of town with a 7-6 win over the Lions, the first over Clear Lake since the 2016 playoff team, but the first time the Bulldogs have escaped Clear Lake with a win since 1990.

“Absolutely exciting,” Bruemmer said of the victory. “Great to see excitement and energy. It was fantastic.

West Fork cruises to Homecoming win

SHEFFIELD — West Fork’s Homecoming Week came to a successful conclusion Friday night, as the Warhawk gridders rolled to a 48-8 victory over the Nashua-Plainfield Huskies in Class A, District 3 action.

The Warhawks ran their record to 2-1 in Class A, District 3 action and raised their overall mark to 3-1. Nashua-Plainfield fell to 0-3 in the district and 1-4 overall.

North Butler volleyball overcomes road test at AGWSR

ACKLEY – Low energy and facing a hostile environment got to North Butler’s volleyball team early at AGWSR, but the 14-4 Bearcats quickly regrouped for a 3-1 non-conference match win over the Cougars on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Even though Sydney Eiklenborg is still not 100 percent from a pre-season ankle injury, the senior posted 15 kills, two blocks, nine digs and was perfect on 16 serves with three aces, including a key run in set two in which North Butler was down 8-2 and she brought North Butler back for a 13-8 lead by the time she was done.

Second-ranked Osage sweeps W. Fork

SHEFFIELD – West Fork first-year coach Hannah Vaughan knew what she was getting when Class 3A No. 2 Osage came to Sheffield on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

And the Warhawks got the expected from the Green Devils in the form of a 25-8, 25-10, 25-13 sweep.

But Vaughan still liked the way her team handled itself against the 14-0 team.

Warhawks runners-up at their own meet

ROCKWELL – With one final determined sprint to the finish, West Fork senior Cail Weaver couldn’t overcome Newman’s Joey Ringo for the individual varsity boys’ title at Linn Grove Country Club on Monday, Sept. 21.

Weaver, who trailed Ringo by a larger margin than the final sprint, made it a race by the time the duo reached the bridge.

“We were probably right before the bridge,” Weaver said. “It was an easy 400 meters when we both started kicking. It was a sprint to the finish, for sure.
