Bulldogs Crown Several NCC Champions

The Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys’ and girls’ track and field teams ran at the North Central Conference track meet this past Thursday. The boys traveled to Webster City, while the girls headed to Fort Dodge. The Boys team was looking to continue their performance streak and finish the season strong before heading into the district track meet.
The Bulldog girls’ team competed against the other NCC teams in Fort Dodge at Dodger Stadium. There, sophomore Charlee Morton would continue her dominance in field events for the Bulldogs winning a conference title in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 8 inches and placing second in the discus though, with a 109-foot 8-inch throw. Fellow sophomore Lily Hambly finished sixth in the high jump. In the running events, the Bulldogs would have some place winners as well. Sophomore Abby Drier finished seventh in the 100-meter dash and third in the 100-meter hurdles and junior Teaghan Bird finished in sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Fellow junior Lydia Maas logged seventh in the 1,500-meter run and sixth in the 3,000-meter run.
The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Gronewold, Eilderts, Showalter and Bird placed fourth while the 4 x 200-meter relay of Hambly, Dietz, Castroand Dunnwald would finish in seventh place. The 4 x 400-meter relay team also finished seventh and consisted of Gronewold, Castro, Dietzand Dunnwald. The sprint medley relay finished in fourth place with Drier and Eilderts running the 100-meter legs, Showalter running the 200-meter leg and Gronewold running the 400-meter. The distance medley, with Showalter and Eilderts running the 200-meter, Gronewold running the 400-meter and Maas running the 800-meter, finished seventh. The shuttle hurdle relay would end up finishing third overall, with the team of Drier, Hambly, Birdand Showalter. The girls scored 59 points and finished seventh in the conference.
The boys’ track team headed down to Webster City for its conference track meet. The Bulldogs scored in every field event as junior Tucker Schmitt tied for fifth place in the high jump clearing the 5-foot, 4-inch mark. Fellow junior Gage Plagge was the runner-up in the long jump while junior Scott Harr finished as the conference runner-up in the shot put and was fifth in the discus. The Bulldogs finished first and second in the 100-meter dash with senior Jack Drier claiming the conference title with a time of 11.01 seconds and junior Gavin Meader taking second with a time of 11.11. Junior Aiden Polk finished sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles and sophomore Colin Bird finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles. The Bulldogs also earned conference titles in the 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 200-meter relays with runners Drier, Murray, Meaderand Valenzuela. The 4 x 400-meter relay finished eighth and the 4 x 800-meter relay finished in seventh. The sprint medley team would claim another conference title for the Bulldogs in a conference meet-record time of 1:34.84. Murray and Meader ran the 100-meter, Valenzuela ran the 200, with Plagge running the 400-meter. The distance medley finished in fifth place, while the shuttle hurdle finished in fourth place. The Bulldogs would score 87.5 points overall and finish fourth in the NCC.
The next time the Bulldogs take the track it will be to qualify for the state track meet. The boys and girls will travel down to Nevada for the district qualifying meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM and tickets must be purchased online through the state.
