Meyer wins again

MASON CITY – Ellie Meyer of Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR eclipsed the competition by more than two minutes at the Mason City Newman cross country on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

She came in at 19:08.4. The Cadets lay claim to three top-10 finishes, but were second to Mason City Newman, 66-81.

Finishing among the top-10 for the Cadets were Teah Miller (fourth), Abby Harding (eighth), Kate Pfaltzgraff (27) and Trinity Rotgers (47).

IF-A/AGWSR boys were 11th in the 15-team field with 244 team points. The top finisher for the Cadets was Jaden Bartlett in 20:13.8.

AGWSR back gallops for 250 yards, five TDs against Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE — The recipe for AGWSR’s Jaden Penning was to the senior’s taste.

When you add an experienced and speedy three-time all-district running back to a solid line going up against a team just making its program return after a two-year hiatus into the mix.

Sprinkle in four key missing players already on the Indians’ side and the result was a 72-20 triumph for the Cougars over Clarksville on Friday, Aug. 29.

CLARION – The Bulldog football team earned a season-opening win over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows with not one, nor two, but three safeties highlighted in this 18-4 victory.

Bulldogs sweep West Fork to open 2020 season

SHEFFIELD – Near tears talking about her very first coaching victory, Bulldog head coach Sarah Miller tried to convey how happy she was with her team.

The Bulldogs came back from a seven-point deficit in the opening set and also trailed 22-21 in the third but rallied to take a 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 sweep over West Fork in the annual Franklin County rivalry match.

Bulldog trio nab top-10 finishes at Cadet Invitational

HAMPTON – Some young, strong Bulldog runners took to Maynes Grove and raced to top-10 finishes, including a runner-up spot for freshman Lydia Maas in the varsity girls’ race on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Maas was second only to IF-A/AGWSR’s Ellie Meyer, who claimed her second straight home meet title.

Meyer ran to the win in 19 minutes, 27.7 seconds while Maas was nearly two minutes back at 21:17.5. Third-place, also by the Cadets’ Teah Miller, was more than a minute behind Maas (22:59.8).

AGWSR community remembers teacher, coach Hames

ACKLEY – Brad Hames’ life has been defined as one of service and commitment to friends, family, students and colleagues in the AGWSR community.

“His roots go deep and wide here in Ackley,” AGWSR High School Principal Jason Gabel said.

Described often as having a laid-back, but straightforward and competitive personality, and the willingness to do a variety of things to support the area where he lived and worked, the AGWSR family is in mourning for the Hames family after Brad died at the age of 48 during a morning walk on Monday, Aug. 17.

Local coaches react as IHSAA revises football schedules

HAMPTON – When the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced a revision to the 2020 football schedule, it knocked second-year Bulldog head coach Andy Bruemmer for a loop.

“I was a little more shocked than anything else,” Bruemmer said. “My friends in the coaching business, no one had any idea this was going to come out. I understand it; I’ve been watching numbers and what we were going to do with football and how we are going to adjust.”

Miller moves up to first team all-NCC

HAMPTON – A year removed from a second team all-conference honor, senior Courtney Miller earned top honors in her final season with the Bulldog softball team.

Miller switched places with teammate Avery Hanson, who earned first team honors in 2019 and was voted to the second team this season.

While batting .382, Miller finished with a double, two triples and five RBI.

Hanson hit .368 with four doubles and seven RBI. She pitched to a 1-5 record with 41 strikeouts in the NCC.

Third team honors went to freshman Kylee Whipple, an infielder who batted .333.

Uhlenhopp repeats as first team all-NCC

HAMPTON – Bulldog senior Drew Uhlenhopp repeated as first team all-conference in the North Central Conference announced last week.

The shortstop for coach Matt Lokenvitz’s team had his season cut short by the COVID-19 virus, finishing with 110 career hits, which placed him fifth in the school record book.

He was 9-of-21 at the plate this season, including three doubles and four RBI with a batting average of .429.
