South Hardin turns back AGWSR boys

ACKLEY –A share of the North Iowa Cedar West Conference crown was captured by the South Hardin boys’ basketball team, turning back a feisty AGWSR here Monday.

A heavy dose of Beau Butler in the paint powered the Tigers, posting an impressive double-double of 26 points and 19 rebounds. The junior was highly-efficient, making 9-of-11 field goals and 8-of-10 free throws. He had 11 defensive rebounds and eight on the offensive end.

Tempers flare in final placing match for Warhawks

OSAGE – Wrestling the final match of the day at the Top of Iowa Conference meet at Osage’s new gymnasium, a little animosity at the end was hard to miss between Central Springs’ Dalton Dewitt and Levi Janssen.

Janssen hung on for a 5-3 decision, but after the match was over, Dewitt let the frustrations of his day out and shoved and trash-talked Janssen, resulting in a team point being deducted from the Panthers.

And, of course, Janssen was hoping for better for himself, but he was stunned in the match that would have sent him to the consolation championship.

Bench play keeps spark going for No. 3 Warhawks

SHEFFIELD – Once the starters have exited, there is no let-down for Class 1A No. 3 West Fork.

The bench picks up where the Warhawk starting five have left off, and in fact, give a hard case for more playing time.

Case in point is junior Cail Weaver, who made the most of his minutes by leading coach Frank Schnoes’ squad with 19 points, three rebounds and two steals as West Fork blew past visiting Central Springs, 84-37, on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

West Fork girls top Central Springs

SHEFFIELD – Makenzie Fessler was certain to have one of her best games.

The junior starting guard for West Fork was going up against her second cousin, Kaylea Fessler, a starter for Central Springs and she went all out, scoring eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the Warhawks’ 53-22 win over the Panthers.

Gerbracht, Rotgers medal at girls state

WAVERLY – Everything was crashing in on Ali Gerbracht.

The expectations as a returning state champion and being the winningest girls’ wrestler in Iowa history, the rigors of making weight all season long, the challenge of the 106-pound bracket in front of a Waverly-Shell Rock High School audience that exceeded capacity.

In Saturday afternoon’s 106-pound championship match at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Officials Association’s girls state wrestling tournament, it all finally caught up to Gerbracht.

Class 1A No. 5 Warhawks pull away from foul line

SHEFFIELD — Veteran coach Frank Schnoes said after the dust had settled that this game certainly didn’t feel like a double-digit victory.

Indeed, the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game between the Bulldogs and West Fork, ranked fifth in Class 1A, was 58-50 with a little more than a minute and a half to go before a march to the free throw line for the Warhawks resulted in a 69-50 home win.

“I expected a tough game tonight,” Schnoes said. “A 19-point win, but it feels more like a four-point win, we opened it up late with free throws and got some key rebounds late.

Bulldogs ratchet up defense against Warhawks

SHEFFIELD — Trailing 10-4 after the first quarter, the Class 3A No. 13 Bulldog girls basketball team turned up the defensive heat to hold the Warhawks to 22 points the rest of the way in a 57-32 victory at Sheffield.

The visitors struggled from the field in that first quarter and Warhawk senior post Emily Caspers had seven points in that opening eight minutes.

“We tend to struggle when we don’t hit shots to keep our defensive intensity up,” Bulldog coach Miranda Valley said, “and that’s what happened in that situation.

Bulldogs click in win over Cowboys

HAMPTON — Among games played recently for his Bulldogs, head coach Heath Walton rates this one against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows pretty high.

His team took a slim one-point lead into halftime and never trailed in a 77-61 victory over the Cowboys on Friday, Jan. 24.

“We said in the locker room, ‘we played a good game,’” Walton said. “The weird thing is, I don’t walk away and say, ‘we absolutely played out of our minds.’ We played really well, to be honest, I thought we played like the way we hoped we were capable of playing other times.

Bulldogs pull away from Cowgirls

HAMPTON — A bigger, physical Clarion-Goldfield-Dows team provided a momentary challenge for the Class 3A No. 13 Bulldogs, but they were able to pull away in this 58-34 win on Friday, Jan. 24.

Avery Hanson scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second half as coach Miranda Valley’s team improved to 13-1 overall, 8-1 in the North Central Conference.

“Sometimes, you just have to play through adversity,” Valley said, “and they did. Clarion had been playing really well coming in and I’m happy with the way we put things together in the second half and had a good win.”

Warhawks pound Northwood-Kensett

SHEFFIELD – Perhaps the scariest part about Class 1A No. 5 West Fork boys’ basketball team’s 92-19 beat-down of Northwood-Kensett last week was the fact its starting and second-string post players were out with injury.

The Warhawks, which improved to 13-1 overall, 10-0 in the Top of Iowa East Conference, played all 12 on its roster who were in uniform and all but one scored due to an injury; and even still all contributed in what turned out to be only a point shy of the school record for points scored in a game.
