SHEFFIELD – Kayden Ames came out on fire from beyond the three-point line, coming up short of matching his school-record tying mark of three-point makes in a game as West Fork rolled out to a 79-31 win over North Butler on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Ames was 6-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first half alone with the last one just rimming out on his way to a game-high 22 points for the Warhawks.

“He’s really close,” West Fork coach Frank Schnoes said. “He was in a slump for a long time, so it was nice to see him come out of that.”

HAMPTON — Bulldog interim coach Matt Lokenvitz looked on as the team went toe-to-toe with Class 3A No. 10 Clear Lake on Friday, Jan. 29.

The first time the two teams met, the Lions won by more than 30 points.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs trailed by 11 and head it within single digits for much of the third quarter.

SHEFFIELD – West Fork coach Jared Arbegast just wanted his kids he had available to wrestle.

With only seven, at best, on his roster for Senior Night, that made it hard to do and resulted in a final dual loss to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura his Warhawks could have easily won.

Both senior heavyweight Levi Janssen and top-ranked 106-pounder Kale Petersen were at home with illness that was not COVID-related and the Cardinals won the final dual of the night 31-30 by sending more bodies out to the mat to receive forfeits.

CORALVILLE – AGWSR freshman Rory Siems earned a sixth-place medal to lead a trio of Cougars at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association’s girls state wrestling tournament, held last Friday and Saturday at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

For the first two years, the state tournament was held at Waverly-Shell Rock High School, and moving to a bigger venue was a welcome change for AGWSR head coach Chad Gerbracht, even with attendance restrictions in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
