HAMPTON – Adding another home dual meet turned out to be a good experiment for the Bulldog wrestling team as they went 3-2 against some solid competition on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Coach Patrick Hansen’s team defeated St. Ansgar, Clear Lake and Eagle Grove while dropping a pair to Class 2A No. 2 (dual) ranked Osage and to Class 1A No. 7 (tournament) ranked West Hancock to finish 3-2.

HAMPTON – The Class 3A No. 13 Bulldog girls’ basketball team used its pressure to force 23 steals, led by six for senior Courtney Miller, who needed only four to pass her sister Cassy for fourth on the all-time career steals list.

It all culminated in a 52-22 win over winless Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday, Jan. 3.

The all-time leader in school history is Jessica Mennen with 339, followed by Jessica Speake (309) and Alexa Mennen (283). Courtney Miller had 279 after the win over the Cadets.

BOONE – Discussions over the number of qualifying playoff teams in the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s football playoffs have been going on for more than a decade, and another new proposal was brought before the Board of Control at the Thursday, Dec. 19 regular meeting.

Two recommendations for 32 qualifiers per classification were made at the football advisory committee meeting on Dec. 11. Both were proposed by the Iowa Football Coaches Association and approved by the advisory committee, and both would affect the postseasons for classes 3A, 2A, 1A, A and Eight-Player.

The Bulldog wrestlers were missing a few weight classes and despite their talent were only able to nab one of three home duals, losing two key North Central Conference match-ups against Humboldt (36-31) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (39-33).

Plus, when it came down to the final match against the Cowboys at heavyweight, the Bulldogs were at a distinct disadvantage with Alex Koch weighing in 60 pounds lighter than his opponent that helped decide the final score.
