West Fork stops inspired AGWSR effort

SHEFFIELD – Class 1A No. 5 West Fork stood in the way of AGWSR’s late resurgence this season, ending the Cougars’ campaign with a 67-52 victory at Sheffield on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Four Warhawks scored in double figures, led by Ian Latham’s 17 points as they advanced to the Class 1A District 11 final on Thursday, Feb. 27 against Meskwaki Settlement School at Aplington-Parkersburg High School.

Both AGWSR and West Fork coaches Ryley Schipper and Frank Schnoes agreed, this was a hard-fought test.

Barkema claims eighth in first state trip

DES MOINES — Carl Barkema lost a pair of close decisions to end his season eighth at the Class 2A 138-pound state wrestling meet.

Barkema (43-12) got out to a 4-0 lead against PCM’s Payton Drake in the seventh-place match only to see Drake rally with a pair of takedowns and back points with seconds left on Saturday, Feb. 22.

“We wrestled really well that last match the first four minutes of it,” Bulldog head coach Patrick Hansen said. “Did well, right there at the end…he learned a lot and that wrestler was not too bad.”

Lashbrook sixth for his third state medal

DES MOINES – A break from wrestling, Trey Lashbrook said, is what cost him a higher spot on the Class 1A state wrestling podium.

The AGWSR junior 120-pounder placed sixth for his third state medal, but after losing in the state semifinals, Lashbrook dropped his last two on Saturday to fall to his place.

“I’ll take sixth,” Lashbrook said after his final match on Saturday, Feb. 22, a 7-3 loss by decision against Don Bosco’s Garrett Funk. “It’s not what I want, but it gives me a reason to work and motivation for next year, for sure.

Petersen becomes third Warhawk wrestler to medal

DES MOINES – Kale Petersen’s sixth-place finish in the Class 1A 106-pound state wrestling meet made him only the third West Fork wrestler to reach the medal stand in school history.

Petersen, who follows Jake Hansen, who was the first and the first freshman to medal for the Warhawks, and Jarel Arbegast, the current assistant coach, to achieve the feat for coach Jared Arbegast’s squad.

Following a 15-5 major decision of Highland, Riverside’s Bryce Thompson had assured him of his medal, Petersen put it into perspective.

Garrigan ends AGWSR girls postseason

ALGONA –The tournament trail came to an end for the AGWSR girls’ basketball team, losing 63-41 to Algona Garrigan in a Class 1A, Region 2 semi-final contest here Friday.

The No. 14 Cougars, winners of eight straight, struggled early against the fourth-ranked Golden Bears’ full-court defense. Several of AGWSR’s 18 turnovers came in the opening eight-minutes as Garrigan dashed to an early 15-6 cushion and led by 10, 23-13 after one quarter.

Third time is a charm for AGWSR

SHEFFIELD — The third time was a charm for the AGWSR boys’ basketball team last Thursday, as the Cougars came away with a 65-57 win over the BCLUW Comets in a Class 1A district quarterfinal contest.

AGWSR ran its record to 9-13 with its second win of the campaign in three meetings with BCLUW. The Cougars advanced to the Tuesday, Feb. 25 district semifinal against fifth-ranked West Fork — a 93-34 winner over Clarksville in last Thursday’s second game.

BCLUW finished its season at 9-13.

Warhawks pass opening district test

SHEFFIELD — West Fork’s fifth-ranked Warhawk cagers passed their opening boys’ postseason test in style with last Thursday’s 93-34 Class 1A district quarterfinal win over the Clarksville Indians.

The victory boosted West Fork to 20-2 for the season and moved them into Tuesday’s district semifinal clash at Sheffield against AGWSR — a 65-57 winner over BCLUW in last Thursday’s opening game at Sheffield.

Tuesday’s West Fork game was preceded by the clash between Grundy Center and the Meskwaki Settlement School.

Clarksville ended its season with a 4-19 record.

Bulldogs bow out to Jesup in regional

HAMPTON – A fantastic season for the Bulldog girls’ basketball team came to a stunning halt with a 63-50 loss to Jesup at home in the Class 3A Region 3 semifinal on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

It ended the careers of five seniors who played nearly four full years among them.

A teary head coach Miranda Valley relayed what she told all five: Courtney Miller, Kaci Arjes, Maci Arjes, Briana Grover and Calista Polk.

MFL ends West Fork girls’ season

MONONA – West Fork got out of the gates well, but couldn’t sustain it in a 62-35 regional season-ending loss at MFL MarMac on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Three different Warhawks for coach Rodney Huber’s team finished with nine points, including Makenzie Fessler, Emma Martinek and Emily Caspers as they concluded the season at 11-12 overall.

Caspers also led the way with six rebounds and two blocked shots against the fourth-ranked Bulldogs.

Both Fessler and Ellie Weaver swiped three steals and Maddie Hubka and Madisyn Bonner tallied a pair of assists in the loss.

AGWSR takes rubber game to advance

ACKLEY – A highly-energized defense coupled with a potent inside scoring punch sparked the AGWSR girls’ basketball team to a convincing 49-31 victory over BCLUW here Tuesday during Class 1A regional quarterfinal play.

The Cougars roared early, leaping to a commanding 15-2 lead after one quarter and eventually captured the grudge-match between the two teams.

Knotted 2-all, AGWSR scored the next 13 points behind the tandem of senior Rachel Sicard and sophomore Grace Finger. The pair had a combined 24 points at halftime and 33 for the game.
