While on the golf course, Mark Drier notices something about his son, Jack, that recently saved Mark from further injury following an accident in the Driers’ home.

“Out there, he knows he can’t get super high or super low,” Drier said. “Being on the golf course, you can’t throw temper tantrums, you can’t celebrate a lot or get down too low and part of learning the game has helped him understand that. That’s aligned to where he’s even-keeled and he’s had practice with that.”

Franklin County 4-H wanted to do something to help our communities after learning about the increase demands on our local food pantries. Seeing an idea done in a neighboring county for a food drive as part of a “scoop the loop” event, Jackie Dohlman, Franklin County Extension and Outreach County Youth Coordinator, reached out to community leaders for help.

Former Franklin County 4-H volunteer, Marian Gehrls, of Iowa Falls, worked with the Ruth Project food pantry and the coordinator of the Iowa Falls “scoop the loop”.

A dry start to the planting season has given Angie Rieck-Hinz a sunny outlook on area crop production for this year.

According to the USDA report released last Monday, 54 percent of cornfields in North Central Iowa had been planted, with 9 percent soybeans in. Rieck-Hinz said that her personal observations later in the week show that number could be considerably higher, as farmers took advantage of dry, warm weather.

The Hampton Farmer’s Market has been given the green light to open later this month.

In the first phase to reopen Iowa introduced last Monday, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that farmers markets would be among the services allowed to begin operation on May 1. Barb Ristau, Hampton Farmers Market Board Member, said, therefore, the market will host its first installment on Tuesday, May 19. The market will then run every Tuesday and Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. until October. All markets will be held in the lot east of Hardee’s on Highway 3.
