CAL graduate Natalie Nordlund returned to Latimer on Friday to share with students a children's book she had written to help kids with handling their emotions.

Nordlund has recently released her first book, "My Peaceful Place," an illustrated book designed to help young readers learn calming strategies using their own minds and imaginations.

A graduate of the CAL Class of 2011, Nordlund studied psychology at Drake University before continuing her education in Chicago. She's currently a school psychologist in Milwaukee and is still continuing her education, working on her doctorate.

"I've always wanted to try and make the world a little bit better," said Nordlund.

Inspired by a love of writing, Nordlund decided to apply her psychologist training to a creative work. "My Peaceful Place" was released on October 2 and features rhymes and advice to help children in much the same way Nordlund helps kids in person.

"It's based on a strategy I often use with students," said Nordlund. "That could reach children I'll never have a chance to work with."

Meeting each class in the CAL auditorium, Nordlund talked with students about her book and her experiences at CAL.

Along with getting a chance to interact with the next generation of CAL elementary students, Nordlund was happy to meet up with her former teachers and revisit the school of her youth. Particularly in lieu of the recent building renovations.

"It's very surreal and nostalgic," said Nordlund. "A lot of things have changed about this building."
