Hampton Council discusses stop signs and mini-pitch

The Hampton City Council discussed more than the impending resignation of Mayor Russell Wood during their workshop meeting on Monday, March 21.

At the meeting, Thad Long of SVPA Architects presented the council with an update on plans for city hall renovations. Long reported that the final plans are about complete, though he is not optimistic that the council will especially happy with the estimated cost or timeframe due to the limited availability of supplies and materials.

H-D board reconsidering budget due to inflation

The Hampton-Dumont Community School Board is considering budget cuts for the upcoming fiscal year. On Friday, March 11, the board held a special meeting where Superintendent Todd Lettow advised making a $700,000 reduction to the 2022-23 budget in order to compensate for rising inflation.

This budget cut will be in addition to $1.6 million in cuts that the district has been anticipating as COVID funding expires.

Franklin County takes a second look at wind farm ordinance draft

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors reviewed a second draft of a new ordinance that will regulate the development of future wind farms in the county during their regular meeting on Monday, March 14.

Having already made adjustments to the proposed ordinance the week prior, the supervisors found little to discuss about the second draft outside of minor corrections and clarifications. The one major topic for revision centered on a regulation concerning shadow flicker.

Tom Brolsma seeking Republican Nomination for Franklin County Supervisor

Tom Brolsma of Hampton has announced that he will be seeking the republican nomination for Franklin County District 2 Supervisor.

Brolsma has lived in Hampton for 18 years and recently retired after working for Monsanto as a District Sales Manager. He is now working part-time for Freese Trucking.

Brolsma served 8 years on the Hampton-Dumont Board of Education.

Tom and his wife Marcia founded the Brolsma Family Scholarship.

Brolsma looks forward to the possibility of serving the people of Hampton and Franklin County and working with the other supervisors.

ProStart team sweeps state contest

The H-D/CAL ProStart team made a big impression at the ProStart Invitational contest in Des Moines on Tuesday, March 1.

The culinary club spent months practicing and preparing for the contest where teams of students from across the state showed off their cooking ability and restaurant management ideas.

"It was a great day," said Jane Hoegh, who teaches the ProStart group.

Hampton council works on cleaning up the city

The Hampton City Council discussed stop signs, dog parks, garbage, and street projects during their workshop meeting on Monday, March 7.

Continuing discussion on a matter brought up at the previous meeting, the council considered a request to install stop or yield signs at the intersection of 1st Ave NW and 3rd St. NW, the northeast corner of Fareway.

According to police reports, that corner has been the site of four accidents in the last decade and was acknowledged as an intersection where near misses are common.

Supervisors review first draft of wind farm ordinance

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors reviewed the first draft of a new ordinance that would regulate wind farm development during their regular meeting on Monday, March 7.

One of the primary purposes of the ordinance is to protect rural residents from the noise that wind turbines produce. The ordinance sets a limit of 45 decibels for wind turbines and established protocols for measuring that level.

Hampton considers another dog park location

The Hampton City Council considered a new possibility for the location of a city dog park during their regular meeting on Thursday, February 24.

City Administrator Ron Dunt reported to the council that land owned by Franklin General Hospital had been suggested as a potential location for a park. Dunt also noted that he contacted the hospital on the subject and though the hospital did not oppose having the council discuss the location, there was no indication one way or the other that they would be interested in moving further.
