Hampton holds quick meeting

The Hampton City Council was in-and-out in short order on Thursday, January 27 as their regular meeting lasted all of fifteen minutes.

At the meeting, the council approved a lease renewal between the City of Hampton and Woolstock Mutual Telephone Association for the use of the city's water tower. Woolstock uses the tower to host an antenna that provides wireless internet and pays the city, $950 per month for the space, which is paid in advance for the year.

The council also set a public hearing for the total maximum property tax for Monday, February 21 at 6:00 p.m.

Senator Grassley visits with H-D/CAL students

United States Senator Charles Grassley visited Hampton-Dumont/CAL High School on Friday, January 28 for a Q&A session with students.

Spread across two groups, the students questioned Grassley on current affairs both at home and abroad and Grassley's role in Washington.

Grassley, who at 88 years old is running for an eighth term as Iowa's Senator, was asked why he is continuing to run for office.

"I love serving the people in Iowa. I like improving society," said Grassley. "When you're in government, you can make decisions that affect the entire country."

County Conservations hosts nocturnal tour of Maynes Grove

Franklin County Conservation hosted the first of two outdoor evening events on Monday, January 17 at Maynes Grove.

The Moonlight Ski & Shoe event invited area residents to visit Maynes Grove for a nighttime tour, giving them the opportunity to experience a rarely seen side of the natural environment.

"It's basically a way to get people to hike at Maynes Grove in the evening under the moonlight," said Park Ranger and Naturalist Thomas Rice. "It gives them a chance to try something new."

Latimer council seeks appointment to fill vacancy

The Latimer City Council is on the hunt for a new council member following the resignation of Shaun Koenen, who resigned during their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 12 due to recently moving out of the city.

Koenen had two years left in his term. The council has decided to fill the vacancy by appointment and is reaching out to potential volunteers to accept the position. The appointment is planned to be made at the next meeting on February 16.

H-D/CAL boards joint for joint meeting

The Hampton-Dumont and CAL school boards came together for a joint meeting on Monday, July 24.

At the meeting, the new members of the respective boards were introduced to each other and discussed shared items of interest for the districts, from shared positions to transportation requirements.

Moving into the H-D board's regular meeting, Dan Aalbers and Alexis Vosburg, representing the Hampton-Dumont Education Association, presented the board with their initial offer for the 2022-23 master contract.

COVID-19 cases are surging in Franklin County. Franklin General Hospital (FGH) is asking for your help in slowing the spread.

FGH is holding COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics each week in January and February. Booster and 3rd doses are also highly encouraged and are available at the vaccination clinics. When you call to make your appointment, please specify which dose you are requesting (1st, 2nd or booster).

Hampton receives FY21 audit report

The Hampton City Council went over their FY21 Audit Report during their regular meeting on Thursday, January 13.

Aaron Olsen of TP Anderson and Co. presented the report over Zoom, going over the city's finances and accounting practices over the year. Olsen reported that the city's finances are doing well, with the exception of the city's water fund, which is operating at a negative.

"You are not charging at a rate that can sustain that fund," said Olsen.

CAL plans daycare walkway project

The CAL Community School Board met for their regular meeting on Monday, January 10.

At the meeting the board received the initial negotiation proposal from the CAL Education Association to kick off contract negotiations for the next school year.

Secretary of State challenger visits Hampton

A candidate aiming to become Iowa's next Secretary of State stopped by Hampton on Wednesday, January 12 to meet with residents and generate support for his campaign.

Linn County Auditor Joel Miller, a Democrat, has been serving in office for fifteen years and is now looking to challenge Republican Secretary of State Paul Pate for his position.

Board of Education Names Aaron Becker Next Hampton-Dumont CSD Superintendent

The Hampton-Dumont Board of Education has named Aaron Becker as the school district’s next superintendent.

Becker currently serves as principal of Lisbon Secondary School in Lisbon, Iowa. There, he has developed a school culture of care that focuses on the importance of positive relationships and has worked to increase graduation rates through the formation of the Lisbon Alternative School.
