Amsbaugh takes on position as Franklin County economic development director

Mary Amsbaugh is settling into her new role as Franklin County Development Association's executive director.

Stepping into the role in February, Amsbaugh has been working to promote and increase the economic development of Franklin County.

“I like meeting all the people, finding out their needs, and finding resources for them to help,” said Amsbaugh.

Public Shooting Range Opens in Franklin County

The North Hansell Range is open for the season. This entirely volunteer run range is located in Hansell and is the only public shooting range in Franklin County.

Run by Ray Baltes and a group of dedicated volunteers, the range opened back in 2008.

“It started with a few places to shoot at one hundred and two hundred yards,” said Baltes. “Within the first few years, we had lots more built.”

An experienced shooter, Baltes has been active in target shooting for several decades.

Local food pantries continue service to provide food for those facing sudden financial insecurity

With many families now facing sudden financial uncertainty, area food banks remain an understanding and reliable source to provide balanced meals to those in need.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of area residents have faced job cuts or decreased pay. Betty Springer, Director of the Franklin County Community Food Pantry, said that once layoffs and reductions related to the pandemic increased, so did the traffic through the food bank located at 302 5th Ave. NE in Hampton.

ISU Extension Franklin County hosts informative session on Emerald Ash Borer

With one of the country’s most notorious pests found in the area, area residents learned more about its habits and how to protect their trees.

Earlier this year, experts confirmed the arrival of the emerald ash borer in Franklin County. Franklin County joined dozens of counties in Iowa to host the beetle that has wreaked havoc on ash trees in 34 other states in the country.
