Warhawk Softball Goes 1-2 in Last Week's Contests

The West Fork softball team went 1-2 during last week's games, as they are in the middle of a tough part of their schedule. The game scheduled on Monday, June 16 versus Nashua-Plainfield was rained out. The Warhawks dropped the first two games, first to the Riceville Wildcats 4-2 on Tuesday, June 17 then to the Newman Catholic Knights 6-5 on Thursday, June 19. The Bulldogs would salvage the week with a 13-0 victory over the Northwood-Kensett Vikings on Friday, June 20.
In the first game of the week versus Riceville, West Fork would score one run in the top of the second and fourth innings to tie the game 2-2, before the Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead, which is how the game would end. Sophomore Brooke Rother had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs. Senior Libby Trewin was the starting pitcher for the Warhawks and she pitched six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.
Thursday’s game would be another competitive, hard fought battle and the Warhawks would fall just one run short to the Knights. The Warhawks scored one run in the top of the first inning and four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. However, the Knights would come back with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior Preslee Dickman had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three singles, a double and an RBI. Trewin was the Warhawks’ starting pitcher and she tossed six and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three Knights batters.
The Warhawks would salvage the week with their victory over the Vikings on Friday. The game would end due to the mercy rule after four innings. The Warhawks scored four runs in the top of the first inning, five runs in the top of the third inning and four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Rother had another great day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles and 2 RBIs. Trewin pitched an outstanding game, tossing four perfect innings, not allowing a single base runner and striking out eight Vikings’ batters.
The 1-2 week drops the Warhawks record to 11-4 on the season and 7-2 in conference play. The Warhawks will compete in four games during the week before the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball tournament on Saturday, June 28. The Warhawks battled Newman Catholic at home on Monday, June 23 and Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Tuesday, June 24. The Warhawks will take on Central Springs on the road on Wednesday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m.
