Hampton-Dumont-CAL Boys Sports Year in Review

Here is a year in review of the 2025 Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys sports season. Basketball and wrestling reviews are based on the 2024-25 seasons and do not take into account the current basketball and wrestling seasons.

Basketball: Boys basketball finished 2-12 on the season and 4-19 in conference play. The Bulldogs season came to an end when they lost 74-27 to Clear Lake in the first round of the Class 3A-3 region tournament on February 24. Brady Harr led the Bulldogs with 17.5 points per game, 4.2 assists per game, 13.1 rebounds per game and 2.4 blocks per game. Harr was selected as a first team all-conference member.

Wrestling: Boys wrestling had a solid season and was well represented in the state tournament. Taylor Mahler, Brody Robertson, Charlie Showalter, Luke Showalter, Jaymes Stevens and Madox Stother made it to the state tournament.

Soccer: Boys soccer had a strong season, as they went 10-4-3 over and had a 6-3-0 record in conference play. The Bulldogs made it to the second round of the region playoffs before losing 7-1 to Aplington-Parkersberg in the Class 2A-2 semifinal on May 27. As a team, the Buldogs scored 61 goals a game while allowing 32 goals a game.  Senior Fernando Mota led the Bulldogs with 23 goals scored. Mota also set the school record for career goals scored at 34. Hunter Riekn led the Bulldogs with nine assists to go along with his seven goals scored. Jose Aragon-Mendez saved 173 shots and allowed 21 goals for a 89.2% save percentage. Jose Cruz appeared in three games and saved 19 shots and allowed three goals for 86.4% save percentage. Mota, Christian Zavala, Fernando Mota, Silas Buesman and Gabriel Munguia were selected to the all-conference first team.

Track and Field - The boys Track and Field team placed in the top five in six different meets. The highest the Bulldogs placed all season was third place out of ten teams in the Jim Basye Coed Relays on May 2. and the Bulldog Invitational on April 21, 2025.. The highest point output the Bulldogs had all season was in the Bulldogs invitational when they scored 101 points. Beau Morton qualified for the state track meet and finished 18th overall in the shot put throw.

Golf - The boys' golf team was not able to finish first place in any tournament. The best they finished in any tournament all season is second, which they did in three separate tournaments. The lowest the boys shot in any tournament was 183 at the Oak Ridge Golf Course on April 25.

Tennis: Boys tennis finished the season 3-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play. The Bulldogs lost to Decorah 5-0 in the first round of the IHSAA Substate 4 Tournament on May 17. Andyn White and Jerry Flores led the Bulldogs with four matches won.

Baseball: The baseball team finished 7-21 overall and 5-9 in conference play. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the IHSAA Class 3A Substate 3 playoffs to Boone by a score of 5-1 on July 11. Dwason Wikert led the Bulldogs with a .304 batting average and 16 runs batted in. Wikert also hit one of the two Bulldogs' home runs on the season and went 2-5 on the mound with a 3.17 earned run average. Wikert and Bordy Robertson led the Bulldogs with 40 strikeouts each. Wikert and Taylor Mahler were selected to the all-conference second team. Jaxon Moats was selected to the all-conference third team.

Football: The football team went  5-5 overall and finished 3-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs won their first state playoff game since 2015 when they beat Woodward-Granger 57-36 at home on Oct. 24. The Bulldogs season came to an end when they lost to Osage 27-7 in the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs on Oct. 31. The Bulldogs were well represented on the all-strict team, as 15 players were selected.Maddon Evans, Brady Harr, Brody Strother, Jacob Mahler, Hunter Rieken, Briggs Gruelke, Joseph Powers and Ryder Strother were selected to the all-district first team. Blaek Burmester, Aaden Keehn, Josh Wolford, Emmet Eling and Caden Woods were selected to the all-district second team. Hudson Hansen and and Carter Arends were selected to the honorable mentions team.

Cross Country: Boys cross country finished eighth in the NCC Conference Meet and 13th on Oct. 14 and the finished 13th in the state qualifying meet on October. 22. The best meet finish for the Bulldogs was when they finished in fourth place at Maynes Grove on October, 2 and at the Rice Lake golf and Country Club on Oct. 6. Their lowest team score was when they scored 104 at Maynes Grove.
