Hampton celebrates recovery

People in recovery shared tales of how they’ve turned their life around to help reduce the stigma of seeking help with addiction at the Celebrate Recovery event in Band Shell Park on Saturday, Sept. 7. TRAVIS FISCHER/HAMPTON CHRONICLE
Saturday was a day to celebrate addiction recovery at Bandshell Park.
As part of National Recovery Month, the Celebrate Recovery program in Hampton organized a family friendly event.
The day-long event was organized by Ronna Johnstone, a facilitator and women's leader in Celebrate Recovery, a religious based 12-step program. As a former addict herself, Johnstone has spent the last year thinking about how to promote the program and encourage people that may need help to seek it out.
"Really, I'm just trying to spread the hope of Jesus," said Johnstone. "Jesus is in the business of restoring lives and everybody deserves that."
Throughout the day speakers took to the Band Shell stage to share their stories of recovery.
