Franklin County Democrats Assemble for Feb. 2. Caucus

The Democratic Party of Franklin County held their precinct caucus at La Frontera Monday evening, Feb. 2.
Franklin County Democratic Chair Catherine Crooks told the Chronicle that they saw a record attendance for an off-year caucus, surpassing their attendance numbers from 2018.
The evening began with a chance for people to sign petitions to get candidates on ballots, and with Crooks explaining how the caucus would play out. As she explained to the group, the Feb. 2 caucus would serve as a way to discuss platforms and appoint members to their central committee, along with appointing delegates and alternate delegates and convention committee members.
During the caucus, letters were also read from a number of candidates and leaders, including one from Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart, who encouraged constituents to get involved.
“A precinct caucus is not just a gathering,” she wrote in her letter. “[It’s] a foundational moment to listen, strategize, and organize to make voices heard.”
In her letter, Hart encouraged those in attendance to connect with their party and attend their regular meetings, events and to volunteer whenever possible.
The letter was read by Carol Miller, an active member of the local Democratic Party.
Another active member of the local Democratic Party, Dale Schirmer, told the Chronicle that he was “very pleased” with the turnout of their caucus.
“The midterms do not always draw a lot of support,” Schirmer said. “There seems to be a shift in the energy and now it is time to fight for our democracy.”
Campaign materials were also left out for the following candidates: Rob Sand, who is running for governor; Dave Dawson, who’s running for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District; Josh Turek, who is running for U.S. Senator; Ryan Peterman, who’s running for Iowa Secretary of State; Nathan Sage, who’s running for U.S. Senator; and Nate Willems, who’s running for Attorney General.
Crooks thanked the team at La Frontera for allowing them to meet there.
“We meet each month at La Frontera to support our local businesses,” she said. “Our meetings are part social gatherings and they have fantastic food.”
Crooks said they were able to register new Democrats in the area, with help from several new volunteers who assisted at the event.
