Bulldogs Girls Wrestling Places Third in Go-Hawk Invitational

WAVERLY - It was a strong showing for the Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls wrestling team at the Go-Hawk invitational on Tuesday, Dec. 9 as the Bulldogs finished in third place out of eight teams with a score of 95. Bulldogs head coach, Brittany Stevens, spoke on the strong performance the girls had in the tournament.
"This was a big competition for the girls and we knew it would be tough," Stevens said. "We look for these opportunities to grow and get better. We showed up, and we gave it all we had and their hard work paid off. Every team point matters in a tournament, and these ladies were on it. There were so many hard fought battles, and every girl rose to the occasion."
The Bulldogs had four girls place in the top two, including sophomore Juliet Koch and junior Avalon Mulford, who placed first in their respective weight classes. Koch was thrilled with her performance in the tournament.
"Getting first meant a lot to me," Koch said. "Wrestling is very important to me and I work at it year-round, so being able to see growth and success at a tournament like this was very rewarding."
Mulford also explained what placing first meant to her.
"It meant a lot to me to get first because it was my first getting first ever for wrestling in m first year," Mulford said. "It really proved to me that I want to continue doing wrestling the rest of my high school career."
Koch placed first in the 155 pound class, winning all three of her matches and scoring 20 points for the team. Mulford placed first in the 235 pound class, winning all three of her matches and scoring 20 points for the team. The other wrestlers that scored points for the Bulldogs: junior Elsie Kuper placed second in the 170 pound class and scored 18 points for the team, junior Maren Subbert placed second in the 190 pound class and scored 12 points for the team, sophomore Megan Severs placed fourth in the 140 pound class and scored four points for the team, sophomore Yoselin Ramirez placed fourth in the 145 pound class and scored four points for the team, freshman Caiya Bolland placed fourth in the 170 pound class, junior Adriana Gomez placed fifth in the 125 pound class and scored seven points for the team, freshman Hazel Menken placed fifth in the 235 pound class, junior Marlee Maas placed sixth and scored five points for the team and sophomore Ava Blau placed eighth and scored one point for the team.
The Bulldogs wrestled in the Michelle Jensen Invitational at Humboldt High School on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and their next competition is the Iowa Falls-Alden Invitational at Ellsworth College on Froday, Dec. 19 at 5 p.m.
