Bulldogs Girls Lose Last Home Game to Cardinals

The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls soccer team lost their last game of the regular season versus Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (GHV) by a score of 8-0 on Monday, May 12. It was the last home game of the regular season and senior night for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have four seniors on this year's team that were celebrated; Mallory Rieken, Mary Jane Jensen, Shakira Vela and Maria Ramirez.

The Cardinals would get the scoring started early, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game. After the cardinals quick start the Bulldogs defense would settle in for the majority of the second half, before letting up two more goals later in the half to give GHV a 4-0 lead into half time. The Cardinals would add on four more goals in the second half to secure their 8-0 win. Bulldogs head coach Ben Schalatcher spoke on how important this senior class was to him and to the program. 

“Mallory Rieken has been a staple on defense,” said Schaltcher. “She is kind of the catalyst back there. I have had Shakira Vela for the last two years and she constantly works hard and gives a lot of effort on the field. From where Mary Jane Jensen has started to where she is right now, we could not be more proud of her. Maria Ramirez has the perfect attitude, she always puts the team first and has a heart of gold.” 

Coach Schlachter spoke more on Maria Ramirez and her injury to keep her from playing the last few games. 

“I don’t know if my heart has ever been more broken for a kid. When she broke her ankle vs Webster City it just broke my heart. Losing her is probably going to hurt the most probably because of her positivity.” 

The loss drops the Bulldogs record to 0-12-1 to end the regular season. The Bulldogs girls traveled to Webster City on Monday, April 19 and took on Webster City in the first round of the substate playoffs.
