New H-D Superintendent preparing for first school year

Aaron Becker is getting to know the Hampton community as he prepares to begin his first school year as Superintendent of the Hampton-Dumont Community School District.

Becker has spent his first month on the job trying to get his feet on the ground as he familiarizes himself with the people and ongoing projects of the district before students return to school.

"Right now I'm just trying to get acquainted with all the happenings," said Becker.

Franklin County’s Relay for Life

Franklin County held the Relay for Life in Hampton on Friday, July 22. Crowds amassed of those who have battled cancer, their friends and family, and so many more to support the Relay for Life cause.

Hampton discusses problem with residents and animals

The Hampton City Council discussed public nuisances, a vicious dog, and the hiring of the next police chief during their regular meeting on Thursday, July 14.

At the meeting, the council heard from members in the community regarding a known drug user in their neighborhood and the various issues that arise as a result of the individual and their associates. From late night nuisances and outright theft, the neighbors complained that the issue is getting worse.

Senator Ernst Helps Local Woman Replace Grandfather’s Medals

Senator Joni Ernst visited the West Fork Food Pantry on Saturday, July 16 as a part of her 99 county tour. During her stop, she heard the story of Lisa Rodriguez, a local woman. Lisa told the senator about her grandfather Raymond’s service in World War II and his medals and commendations. Unfortunately, all of these were stolen. Senator Ernst and her office have begun the process of restoring them to the late veteran’s family.

Libertarian candidate for Governor visits Hampton

Rick Stewart, the Libertarian Party candidate for Iowa Governor, rolled through Hampton on Tuesday, July 12 for the Franklin County Fair Parade.

As a third-party candidate without the financial resources of his competitors, Stewart has been attending parades across the state as a way of elevating his profile with potential voters. The Franklin County Fair Parade was his 31st parade of the year for him.

"It's one of the best ways for me to meet Iowa voters from across the state," said Stewart. "Plus it's fun."

Third Annual “Drives for Dollars” in Hampton

The Hampton Country Club hosted the third annual charity golf tournament called “Drives for Dollars” on Saturday, July 9. The tournament drew a crowd of people from across the state, including a busload from Des Moines.

Hampton holds workshop at temporary park location

Council held their regular workshop session at Harriman Park on Monday, July 11.

As the City Hall renovation project gets underway, the council will be meeting at Harriman Park for the remainder of the summer to conduct city business.

On the agenda for Monday, the council received a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission to vacate the city's right-of-way between Fareway and the old co-op property. The city owns the strip of land between the properties, but has not maintained it nor is there any viable use for it.

Drama students work to honor former instructor

A campaign is in progress to honor a former Hampton drama teacher.

Wayne "Hank" Hansen served as the Drama Director of Ames High School from 1970 until his retirement in 2003. Before that though, Hansen got his start in teaching in Hampton as a fresh UNI graduate, teaching at the school from 1965 through 1970.

Hansen passed away in 2020, but the impact he left on countless students over his more than three decades of drama instruction remains strong. So much so that a number of them have come together to ask that Ames High School name their new auditorium in his honor.

Final 2022 Tuesdays on the Town features local artist

The last Tuesdays on the Town for 2022 drew a considerable crowd on the warm afternoon. People gathered in the park for live music, a meal, and admiration for the beautiful downtown of Hampton. The meal was provided by the First Bank of Hampton in support of the Franklin County Food Bank. The music was performed by Brain Herrin, a classically trained musician from Iowa with experience playing with big names like Carly Rae Jepsen and others.
