Jon Craig Schmitt

Jon Craig Schmitt, 70, of rural Sheffield, Iowa, passed away March 19, 2026, at his home following a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory, Hampton, is caring for Jon and his family. Born May 29, 1955, to Forrest and Roma Schmitt, Jon spent his life in the Hampton and Sheffield area. 

After graduating from Hampton High School in 1973 and earning his degree in Automotive Mechanics from NIACC in 1975, Jon dedicated his life to farming and running his business, Jon’s Auto and Truck. He worked in that shop for over 50 years until his retirement on February 28, 2026.

Jon played lead trombone in the Hampton Municipal Band for 54 years and was active in numerous community organizations. 

Jon is survived by his partner, Sheri Bogue; his sisters, Lori Schmitt of Tigard, Oregon, and Diane (Robert) Moore of Porter Ranch, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents Leo & Erma Evans (Beherns) and John & Marie Schmitt (Grabbe)

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Donations in Jon’s memory may be made to the Leukemia Research Foundation.
