Hampton Baseball Drops Three Games Last week

Hampton-Dumont-CAL (HDCAL) softball lost all of the three games they competed in last week. The Bulldogs lost 10-0 to the St. Edmond Gales on Monday, June 23, 11-0 to the West Fork Warhawks on Tuesday, June 24 and 6-5 to the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls 6-5 on Friday, June 27. The Bulldogs were supposed to play Iowa Falls-Alden on Wednesday and Algona on Thursday but both games were postponed due to weather. 

In the game versus St. Edmond on Monday, the Gales scored five runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings for their 10 runs. The game ended after the five run fourth inning due to the mercy rule. Eight grader Kendal Eilderts was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, tossing four innings and allowing 10 runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out one Gales’ batter.

In their game versus West Fork on Tuesday, the game ended after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule. Sophomore Addison Aalbers picked up the one Bulldogs’ hit. Eilderts was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs and she tossed five innings, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two Warhawks’ batters. 

Their game on Friday versus Clarion-Goldfield Dows would be a more competitive game than the first two games of the week. The Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 before scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning, three runs in the bottom of the third inning and one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Cowgirls came back, capped off by a three-run top of the seventh inning to steal the win from the Bulldogs. Senior Charlee Morton set the HDCAL school record for career home runs with her 12th career home run.  Eilderts was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs again and she tossed all seven innings and allowed six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven Cowgirls’ batters. 

The 0-3 week moves the Bulldogs’ record to 4-11 on the season and 3-5 in conference play. The Bulldogs will compete in four games this week, having already played at Webster City on Monday, June 30 and having hosted Grundy Center on Tuesday, July 1.
