Thomas Joseph Crane, 83

    Thomas Joseph Crane, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Dows, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, of T-cell lymphoma, Sezary syndrome, and Parkinson’s disease. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 23 2022, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Hampton, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. at the church. A luncheon will follow the mass.

   Survivors include his children, David (Gail) Crane and Mary Jo Crane; son-in-law, Doug Phillips; grandchildren, Drew (Bethannie) Phillips, Tara Crane, Lauren Netz, Brenden Phillips, and Anna Netz; siblings, Trish (Bob) Cavins, Mary Margaret Wallace, JoAnn Burson, Jim (Paula) Crane, and Suzi (Gary) James; and many nieces and nephews.

   Tom as born on August 15, 1938, in Albia, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Hartzer) Crane. He graduated from Chariton High School, earned his undergraduate degree from UNI Teacher’s College, and his graduate degree from Iowa State University. He began his career teaching high school chemistry and physics in Shenandoah before moving into education administration. He served schools in Dows, Ottumwa, and Blakesburg.

   Tom stayed very active throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing, doing woodworking projects, bicycling including many RAGBRAI’s, riding his Honda Goldwing, and even skydiving a couple of times. Tom was also involved in the community over the years with Knights of Columbus and Rotary International.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Amy Phillips; former wife, Ruth Crane; and wife, Paulette Bridges.

   In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hampton, Iowa.
