Marlys Jean Meyer, 79

Marlys Jean Meyer, 79, died Friday, February 11, 2022, at her home in Hampton, Iowa.  The immediate family will celebrate her life, and she will be laid to rest beside her husband in Lindenwood Cemetery, rural Geneva.

Marlys was born September 10, 1942, the third daughter of Elmer and Anna Held, in Hampton, Iowa.  She graduated from the Geneva Consolidated School in 1960 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1964.  She taught home economics in the Ackley-Geneva school system.

She was united in marriage to Larry E. Meyer on August 5, 1961; two children blessed this marriage.  Together they built a future on the maternal family farm south of Geneva until 2016 when Larry retired from farming and they moved to Hampton, Iowa.

Marlys was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church, the Geneva Women’s Club, and was a former member of the Franklin County AAUW.   She liked to read, play cards, shop and watch movies.  She also enjoyed winters spent in Arizona and weeks spent with family on summer vacations. She often had a cup of coffee in her hand and enjoyed spending time with friends. Marlys had a quiet strength in how she lived her life that inspired her family and friends. She overcame obstacles with grace, creativity and optimism.

Marlys is survived and will be truly missed by her daughter, Janelle (Bradley) McCalla of Waverly, Iowa, and four grandchildren: Brett (Maddie) McCalla and great granddaughter, Marley, of New Hartford, Iowa, Emily McCalla of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Sean Meyer of Chicago, Illinois and Ella Meyer and their mother, Keri Meyer, of Johnston, Iowa.  She also has three sisters: Margery (Carl) Miller, Lois (Leonard) Koch and Elma Kay (Neil) Emmons and brother-in-law, Lyle (Judy) Meyer.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and son, Steven Meyer.
