Nancy Carol (Johansen) Harkema, 87

Nancy Carol (Johansen) Harkema, 87, of Latimer, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Franklin Country View Nursing Facility in Hampton. She was born August 26, 1934 in Anaheim, California, to Harry and Irene (Anderson) Roberts.

 

Nancy graduated from high school in Anaheim, California. She met Gerald Johansen while he was in the armed services and they married on December 18, 1952. To this union, five children were born. This marriage ended in divorce. Nancy was then united in marriage to Ray Harkema on May 6, 2000, at Morgan Methodist Church in Dows.

 

Nancy worked at a printing company in Iowa Falls, Knutsen grocery store in Coulter, babysat numerous children and was a cook at Dudley’s Corner for over 20 years. She was a member of the Latimer Auxiliary and Morgan Methodist Church in Dows. Nancy enjoyed crafting, especially making snowmen and sewing was her one true love.

 

Nancy is survived by her son Dave (Karolyn) Johansen of Latimer; daughter Jan Stratmann of Garner; son John (Brenda) Johansen of Hampton; grandchildren Kristin Schott, Leslie (Gavin) Johansen, Jacob (Molly) Johansen, Josh (Crystal) Stratmann, Trevor (Jessie) Stratmann, Amanda (Joel) Rodemeyer, Jessica Sheely, Shawn Johansen, Shelby (Stephen) McReynolds and Cassie (Michael) Smith; several great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Carol Roberts of California.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray Harkema, daughters Carol Hunter and Sue Johansen, brothers Ed and Fred Roberts, sister Joan Downs and son-in-law Gary Stratmann.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Morgan Methodist Church in Dows or MercyOne North Iowa Hospice.

 

A public visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2022, at the Counsell Woodley Funeral Home in Hampton. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
