Hampton Tree Board installs windbreaks throughout area

The Hampton Tree Board and Franklin County Conservation over the last two weeks have worked to plant new trees before the end of the season.

Earlier in the month, the two organizations planted 15 trees at the Franklin County Law Enforcement Center for a windbreak.

The 15 trees were a mixture of Norway and white spruce trees, which were purchased by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Randy Sanders, Hampton Tree Board, said that the 15 trees will not only provide a windbreak and shade for the building, but also supplement ongoing efforts of the tree board to plant a variety of trees on the grounds to replace a number of ash trees that were removed in recent history.

“They’ve now planted more than have come down,” Sanders said. “There’s a good diversity that has come in.”

Sanders said the property has nearly 40 new trees and nine or 10 different species.

Last week, the tree board planted a number of trees at the sewage and water treatment plants for windbreaks at both locations.

At the sewage plant, the tree board and conservation department installed seven white and bur oak trees as well as three white and Norway spruce trees and a two swamp white and one bitternut oak trees at the water treatment facility.

The trees at the water plants were purchased through the MidAmerican Energy Plants and Shade Program.
