Coulter legion works to finish Freedom Rock corridor

The Coulter Freedom Corridor is nearing completion but needs a boost to reach the finish line.

The Freedom Corridor, located on the north edge of town near the Rolling Prairie Trail, contains the Franklin County Freedom Rock, as well as a statue of a large, bronze bald eagle, flag poles and a Howitzer cannon.

Myron Lawler, Coulter American Legion 658 Post head, said the project has been in the works for the better part of six years. To accompany the features, Lawler said fundraising is underway to help fund concrete installation around the howitzer, landscaping in certain areas, a sign on Highway 3 directing people towards the corridor and lights for some of the features and flag poles.

Lawler said the cause has gotten support from the Northeast Iowa Community Foundation and the Evelyn and Foster Barkema Charitable Trust Foundation, among other donations. Additionally, individuals and organizations have donated supplies and labor.

To complete the project, Lawler said approximately $5,500 to $7,500 is needed. He said the hope is to have the additions installed by the end of the year.

Lawler said the project began as a way to attract people to the area and the trail. He said the area has already proven to be an attractive spot for people along the trail and travelers passing by on Highway 3.

“It’s really provided a wonderful place for people to walk or ride their bikes,” he said. “We wanted to polish it up and get the sign up to diver more people. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon for a picnic or just to hang out.”
