“ I bug my teacher!” Is the theme for nearly 200 middle school students, as part of the 10th annual Kiwanis “BUGs” program. Fifth graders earned certificates and bugs buttons a recent assembly at hampton-dumont middle school.

BUGs is an acronym for "Bringing Up Grades"...an academic achievement program developed by Kiwanis international and implemented by local Kiwanis clubs at schools across the country. BUGs is designed to recognize students for achieving success from one grading period to the next.

Eighty-seven fifth grade students earned BUG honors for bringing up grades, achieving benchmarks or maintaining good standards in the second through portions of the third quarters. The H-D fourth graders will be honored at an upcoming ceremony on Feb. 28.

The Hampton Kiwanis Club has now honored over 1,500 students with awards since the start of the program in 2011.

Also announced was the winner of the bugs poster contest, where they were two winners this year. Ruby Zamarano, fifth grade, and Kinlee Chaplin, fourth grade, won a pizza from Godfather’s and will have their artwork featured on the BUGs t-shirts, the award for achieving bugs status from now until the end of the school year.

The BUGs program is one of many ways the Hampton Kiwanis Club follows the Kiwanis International motto of “serving the children of the world.”

Kiwanis is a global organization dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The Hampton Kiwanis Club also sponsors the "Key" club at the high school along with the "Builders" club at the middle school, teaching volunteerism and developing future leaders through service.
