Phyllis J. Wirtz, 91

Phyllis J. Wirtz, 91, of Hampton passed away Monday, January 9, 2023, at Franklin Country View Nursing Facility in Hampton, where she lived for the past seven years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery. Counsell Woodley Funeral Home of Hampton is caring for Phyllis and her family.
Phyllis was born on June 27, 1931, to Wayne and Laura (Sorensen) Stevens on a farm north of Mason City. She went to country school through the eighth grade. It was during this time she decided that she was going to be a teacher. She graduated from Mason City High School and Jr. College. Later, Phyllis earned a degree from Drake University.
In 1951, she began her teaching career in Zearing. After three years, she taught in Wellsburg for a couple years. She always taught at the third and fourth grade levels. Phyllis moved to Hampton in 1956, and continued teaching for almost thirty-five years, retiring in 1990.
Phyllis married the love of her life, Art Wirtz in June of 1957. They took many trips together. Art passed away in 1983.
Phyllis soon became a world traveler. She traveled by herself and with others. If she wanted to go on a trip – she went. Her travels included Australia (twice), several trips to Europe, including Greece and to Brazil in South America. She also made numerous domestic trips over the years.
Phyllis was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Art, four brothers Allen, Walter, Clevie and Gerald, along with several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Survivors include her brother Ken (Dolores) Stevens of Aredale, her sister Jan Wendt of Hampton, and her sister-in-law Audrey Wirtz of Oregon, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
