Mark Carl Brown, 69

Mark Carl Brown, 69, of Coulter, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 25, 2021, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston. He was born June 11, 1952, in Hampton, Iowa, to Lowell and Lorna (Honold) Brown. 

Mark graduated from CAL Community High School in 1970 and went on to attend and graduate from Waldorf College in 1972.

Mark worked for 35 years for the Department of Transportation. He drove a snow plow truck and worked on the road maintenance crew. He spent as much time as he could helping out on the family farm. He cherished his time in the field during planting and harvest seasons.

Mark had been an active member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer for many years. He was a member of the church board and spent time teaching adult and senior high Sunday School classes. He was a man of great faith. Mark was an active member of the Coulter community. He served his town both as a member of the city council and as mayor. He also took time to help take care of the Coulter Cemetery. Mark was a former member of the Franklin County Fair Board and enjoyed spending his time during the fair volunteering at the homemade ice cream stand. 

Mark spent a fair amount of his free time woodworking. He was an accomplished woodworker and carver. He could see and restore the hidden beauty of a piece of furniture while preserving the historic craftsmanship that was originally intended. Mark enjoyed the outdoors, spending many nights with a cup of coffee watching the sun set. He also liked working on his tractors. Later in life Mark enjoyed reading about history. He also loved playing games and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mark was an unassuming, hardworking man. He had a gentle Christian heart full of kindness. Mark was always ready and willing to help anyone in need. He will be missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mark is survived by his daughter, Kendra (Kirk) Haage of Pleasant Hill, his grandchildren, Rielyn and Rowen Haage, his father, Lowell Brown of Hampton, his brother, Alan (Deb) Brown of Hampton, his sister, Dawn (Steve) Henning of Latimer, and his nephews, Casey Henning, and Clint (Christie) Henning and their children. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorna Brown and by both of his maternal and paternal grandparents.  

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2021, at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, followed by burial in the Coulter Cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to the service at the church on Monday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton cared for Mark and his family.
