James 'Jim' Allen Koenen
James “Jim” Allen Koenen, 79, of Hampton, passed away Friday, September 6, 2024, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Woodley Funeral Home in Hampton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 13, 2024, at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Jim and his family.
Jim was born September 16, 1944, in Franklin County, Iowa, son of Pete and Esther (Blau) Koenen. He grew up on the family farm near Latimer and graduated from CAL Community School, class of 1963. Jim furthered his education at Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska, studying auto body and fender work. He then served in the National Guard for 6 years.
On September 17, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Sharon Stech at the Hampton United Methodist Church. To this union, two daughters were born; Roxie and Amber. Jim worked at Dyer Pontiac in Hampton for several years and at Maytag for a short time before starting his own business, Franklin County Auto Body Inc. He was owner/operator for 44 years during which he acquired many valued employees, DECCA students, customers, and coffee buddies. Jim retired in 2017 and worked part-time delivering newspapers for the Hampton Chronicle. He was a member of Fish and Game, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and the Hampton United Methodist Church.
Jim was quite the outdoorsmen. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapshooting and snowmobiling. He liked anything with a motor; tractors, jeeps, boats, motorcycles and hot rods. He enjoyed going to car shows and cruises. Jim and Sharon loved Country Western music and dancing. He made many great friends over the years through his wide variety of hobbies. Jim and his family loved taking trips all together, some highlights being; Florida, Colorado, Yellowstone and Tennessee. He and Sharon also took trips to Australia, Mexico and Alaska. Jim was proud of his girls, son-in-law Todd, and his beloved grandkids. He loved attending their many activities and sharing stories of their many adventures and accomplishments.
Jim will be greatly missed by his wife Sharon Koenen of Hampton; daughters Roxie Koenen of Marion and Amber (Todd) Peterson of Center Point; grandchildren Madison (Andrew Benning) Korth of Cedar Rapids, Taylor Peterson of Cedar Rapids, Kennedy (Connor Ulven) Korth of Waukee, Brooklyn (Logan) Shada of Cedar Falls, James (Isabell) Peterson of Ames and Cash Peterson of Center Point; great-granddaughter Willow Shada; sister Marge Carnahan of Des Moines; brother Harlan (Sharon) Koenen of Daytona, Florida; sister-in-law Kathy Heilskov of Coralville; brothers-in-law Bill (Sue) Stech of Altoona and Terry (Jimmie) Stech of Lexington, Kentucky; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Esther Koenen; in-laws Bernie and Mo Stech; brothers-in-law Bob Heilskov and Corwin Carnahan and nephew Steve Carnahan.
