HyVee begins work to convert former Shopko building

Work to transform the former Shopko building in Hampton to its new function will begin this week.

HyVee’s corporate office last week announced that construction and renovation on the building to accommodate the new Dollar Fresh store HyVee intends to open this summer will begin this week.

The Dollar Fresh format, which HyVee rolled out in 2018 across Iowa, features a full grocery section, baked goods, produce and a value section. The idea behind the format is to give smaller communities that typically don’t have access to HyVee stores.

Christina Gayman, Director of Public Relations for HyVee, said Hampton shoppers can expect similar features at the store but the final departments and features will be known to the public at a later date.

She said with construction beginning, the timeline is still on track for the store to open in the late summer.

The addition of HyVee to the community was also bolstered by the Hampton City Council’s decision last Thursday to approve the development agreement with HyVee. The agreement finalizes the process to allow HyVee to operate in the city and makes the company eligible to apply for commercial property tax abatements per the City’s Urban Revitalization Plan.

Hampton City Manager Ron Dunt said with HyVee now formally finished with processes to operate, the city is excited to welcome the company as a member of the community.

“The City of Hampton appreciates HyVee choosing to invest in Hampton and it was good working with HyVee throughout the process,” he said. “We look forward to HyVee opening and creating jobs and providing additional services to the community.”
