H-D-CAL students celebrate modified Prom

Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School juniors and seniors haven’t been in school for nearly four months, but it’s never too late for prom.

The students on Saturday, June 27 celebrated an abbrevi-ated 2020 Prom, which was originally scheduled for early April but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Approximately 100 stu-dents gathered at the Franklin County Fairgrounds for a prom walk in order to allow parents to see the couples and take photos. Parents of jun-iors served a dinner following the prom walk.

Students were then allowed to change clothes for the After Prom. After Prom activities included games such as Spikeball, board games, mas-sages, ping pong, video games and air hockey. Prizes, including a kayak, MacBook, iPad, Apple Watch, televi-sions and more were given out throughout the night.

Students and volunteers were encouraged to wear masks and use hand sanitizer between games, and tempera-tures were taken at the door.

Shelly Aalbers, who helped organize the event, said that while the evening wasn’t the prom that was normally planned, the parents, students and local businesses made the most of the situa-tion given the circumstances.

“Many businesses were very supportive and gen-erous. We could not have put this on without all of their generous donations,” she said. “The kids were so appreciative and enjoyed the evening.”
