Dallas Roger Slagle

Dallas Roger Slagle, 80, of Sheffield, Iowa passed away Friday, October 11, 2024, at the University of Iowa Clinics and Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton with burial in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. before the service. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton.

Dallas was a 1962 graduate of the Sheffield-Chapin High School in Sheffield, Iowa. He played in every sport at the Highest Level and was also a member of the Sheffield-Chapin High School Band. Dallas went on and attended Mason City Junior College in Mason City, Iowa. He then transferred to Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. After tragically losing his father, Dallas went back to Sheffield and stayed with his mom. He began working for the Sheffield Brick and Tile Company in Sheffield, Iowa.

Dallas continued his sports career, playing and pitching for a few fastpitch softball teams. He is most remembered by pitching and playing for Hans Sell, who sponsored the Clear Lake Butt’r Topp Bakery, from Clear Lake, Iowa for many years. Dallas was later inducted into the ASA Hall of Fame in 1993. He was also inducted into the River City Hall of Fame in Mason City, Iowa along with teammates Dale Root and Bob Sturgess July 16, 1994.

Dallas was united in marriage to Debra Siems on September 28, 1974 in Sheffield, Iowa. They were both blessed with two children Chad and Jill. Dallas enjoyed watching them grow up and excel in sports for many years making a name for themselves. He was very proud of both of them.

Dallas continued working for Sheffield Brick and Tile Company until it closed down. He then went and worked for Seabee Corporation in Hampton, Iowa. Dallas helped Ned Bohach coach the Sparanettes of Sheffield-Chapin and later Sheffield-Chapin/Meservey-Thornton High School softball teams. Dallas also helped coach softball with Tom Dunn and later Joe Yegge at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa. Dallas and Mick Maassen both helped put on a number of pitching clinics in the North Iowa area. He also passed his pitching knowledge on to several pitchers around the area with lessons. Dallas refereed many Iowa High School Football games with the crew chief Ned Bohach, and Iowa High School Basketball girls and boys games with Harlan Rice for many years. He also was a Track Starter for numerous Track Meets around the area for many years. Dallas enjoyed working and helping out a few different farmers during the busy seasons. Dallas liked helping out Parish Plagge, shuttling cars back and forth, whenever he could.

During Dallas’s younger days, his hobbies included all sports of course, along with bowling, hunting, fishing. Later on he enjoyed playing golf, cards, cribbage, morning coffee times and reminiscing with his “coffee guys”.

Overall, Dallas Slagle was pretty much an “ESPN walking/talking Sports Page!” Sports was definitely his passion! He was an avid Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Braves, and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He also continued keeping up with the West Fork Warhawks as well. But most of all…. Dallas (Grandpa D) loved and enjoyed watching his three grandchildren grow up, play, and excel in their sports. Easton and Jaeden Pratt playing for the Ankeny Centennial Jaguars, and Tate Slagle playing for the Algona Bulldogs. He was very proud of their talents and accomplishments. You could always count on him boasting about them wherever he may have been. He was looking forward to following Easton, who is already attending Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota playing baseball, Jaeden who will be playing basketball next year for Illinois State in Normal, Illinois, and Tate who will be playing baseball for the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

Dallas was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Martha Slagle, and grandson Zak Edward Slagle, son of Chad and Amy Slagle. Surviving family is his son Chad (Amy)Slagle and grandson Tate all of Algona, Iowa. Daughter Jill (John)Pratt and grandson Easton and granddaughter Jaeden, all of Ankeny, Iowa.
