Chronicle earns 15 awards in INA contest

The Hampton Chronicle claimed more than a dozen awards at the 2020 Iowa Newspaper Association Awards Banquet last Friday.

Each year, the INA hosts the Iowa Better Newspaper Contests ceremony to celebrate journalistic accomplishments from the previous year in connection with the annual Convention and Trade Show.

This year’s contest saw 3,335 entries across five classes based on circulation numbers. The Hampton Chronicle competes in Weekly Class II, for newspapers with circulations between 961 to 1,550.

In total, the Chronicle earned 15 awards, with first place wins for Best Coverage of Business, Best Headline Writing and Best Ad Designer.

Second place finishes included Best Special Section – Editorial, Best Use of Graphics, Best Front Page, Best Continuing Coverage and Best Special Section in Advertising. The Chronicle also took third in Total Newspaper Design, Coverage of Education, Best Personality Feature, Best Sports Story, Best Sports Feature, Best ad featuring grocery/food/entertainment and Best advertising idea for a community promotion or event.

The amount of awards earned also qualified the Chronicle to be in the running for General Excellence, given to the newspapers with the highest point total in each class for the contest. The Chronicle finished third in General Excellence for Weekly Class II.

As a company, Mid-America Publishing, which includes the Hampton Chronicle and 25 other publications, took home a total of 56 awards, including two third place Best of Class for Advertising honors for the Lake City Graphic-Advocate and the Sigourney News-Review.
