Carol J. Shear

Carol J. Shear, 90, of Winter Park, Florida, formerly of Hampton, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Watercrest Winter Park Senior Living. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Hampton United Methodist Church with visitation held one hour prior to the service. Carol will be laid to rest in the Hampton Cemetery.  Woodley Funeral Home of Hampton is caring for Carol and her family.

Carol Jean Shear was born July 7, 1934, on her grandparent’s farm at Newark Township in Wright County, Iowa, daughter of Emory and Evelyn (Hansel) Johnson. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1970, receiving her bachelor’s degree in teaching. On August 4, 1954, Carol was united in marriage to Earl Shear. To this union, two daughters were born.

Carol was an elementary school teacher at the Hampton School District. She was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and PEO. Carol was a devoted family member and sports enthusiast who cherished attending her grandkids’ events and Iowa football and basketball games. A talented seamstress and crossword puzzler, she enjoyed playing Solitaire on her computer. Her travels took her to Norway and Sweden to connect with cousins, and she found joy in cruising, often relaxing on deck while watching the waves.

Carol is survived by her daughters: Paula Shear of Orlando, FL, and Julie (Gene) Harris of Winter Park, FL; grandchildren: Kyle (Shannon) Bassett of Alleman, IA; Kelly Bassett (Hector Vidal) of Winter Park, FL; Logan Brown of Glendale, AZ; Luke Brown of Orlando, FL; Rachel Harris of New York City, NY; Will (Isabella) Harris of Long Island City, NY, and Rebekah (Jason) Popp of Plymouth, MN; great-grandchildren: Deion, Devin, Daunte and Donovan Bassett; Joseph and Elvana Brown; Mila Brown; Weston Jackson; Eleanore and Camilla Harris, and Sophie Popp; sister Patricia (Mervin) Berkland of Spring Park, MN; and sister-in-law Arlet Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl Shear in 1991, sister Marilyn and brother Jerry.
