Carl Heeren, 91

Carl Heeren, 91, of Hansell, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. He was born on November 30, 1930, in Butler County, Iowa, to George and Ida (Plummer) Heeren.

Carl graduated from Hansell Consolidated in 1948. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Roemer on August 6, 1950, at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Carl and Dorothy were longtime members of the Hansell United Methodist Church. He and Dorothy then became members of the West Fork United Methodist Church, where they remained active.

Carl farmed in the Hansell area and also owned the Feed Store in Hansell. He was a member of the Dumont Lions Club, president and board member of Dumont Telephone and was the first president of Pheasants Forever in Franklin County.

Carl liked to take his children on trips when they were young. They went to all sorts of places, but he always made sure they learned something wherever they went. Farming was Carl's passion, but he also enjoyed gardening. He was a master gardener and loved working alongside Dorothy. He liked to bird watch and always made sure to have birdseed on hand to feed them. In their later years, Carl and Dorothy traveled all around the country, making stops in Hawaii, Texas and Florida. They also enjoyed time on an Alaskan cruise. When he wasn't traveling you could find Carl at the feed store in Hansell, or with his coffee group in Dumont. He also loved attending his grandchildrens’ sporting events and activities.

Carl is survived by his son Steve (Holly) Heeren of Alexander, son Dean (Vicki) Heeren of Hampton, daughter Mary (Steve Helmke) Hawley of Belmond, son Paul (Kathy) Heeren of Hampton, grandchildren David (Kyung-youn) Lyon, John (Rita) Heeren, Ben Heeren, Jeshua Heeren, Tyler (Arizona) Heeren, Stephany (Darren) Heeren, Emily (Ryan) Hurley, Mandy (Jamie) Chaney, Krista (Jeremy) Carlson, Joe Perez, Kim (John) Troyer and Kacey (Jake) Bauwens, along with numerous great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and other extended relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy Heeren, brother Dallas Heeren and son-in-law Rick Hawley.

Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 18, 2022, at Counsell Woodley Funeral Home in Dumont. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022, at West Fork United Methodist Church in rural Sheffield. Burial took place in the Ingham Township Cemetery in rural Hansell.

The Counsell Woodley Funeral Home of Dumont cared for Carl and his family.
