HAMPTON – Some young, strong Bulldog runners took to Maynes Grove and raced to top-10 finishes, including a runner-up spot for freshman Lydia Maas in the varsity girls’ race on Thursday, Aug. 27.
Maas was second only to IF-A/AGWSR’s Ellie Meyer, who claimed her second straight home meet title.
Meyer ran to the win in 19 minutes, 27.7 seconds while Maas was nearly two minutes back at 21:17.5. Third-place, also by the Cadets’ Teah Miller, was more than a minute behind Maas (22:59.8).
“Lydia ran a great time and placing second in her first varsity cross country meet is pretty amazing,” Bulldog head coach Traci Moorehead said. “She was nervous for the meet and rightfully so, but she came out and did her best! That is all, we as coaches, can ask for.”
Junior Sydney Buseman completed the top-10 in the meet in 24:55.1. Even though Lauren Meader also finished high at 25th, the Bulldogs didn’t have enough varsity runners to complete a team score.
“Sydney Buseman came with a solid time,” Moorehead said, “putting her in the medals, also.”
The Bulldog boys, led by a 10th-place finish by sophomore Jack Showalter, finished sixth out of eight teams at the meet with 144 team points. He crossed the finish line in 19:47.8.
“Very excited for Jack Showalter as well in his first cross country meet ever,” Moorehead said, “to finish in 10th place. Maybe for him, it was good not to know what to expect.”
Rounding out team finishes for coach Moorehead’s squad were Zayden Erdman (20), Jace Spurgeon (31), Andyn Showalter (39) and Marshal Rust (44).
The boys’ overall winner was Humboldt’s Quinton Orr, who clocked in at 16:27.8. Humboldt also won the boys’ team title. The girls’ swept the team title with four top-10 finishes among the Wildcats.
