Hot start for Cougars ends Bearcat year

ACKLEY – Maybe it was the good luck charm AGWSR coach Laurie Gann wore around her neck.

The necklace, supplied by senior forward MaKenna Kuper’s fourth-grade sister Kesley, was all part of a spirited outfit for Gann and the Cougars before the Class 1A Region 1 opening game on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Whatever it was, AGWSR (13-7) couldn’t have asked for a better start in an eventual 60-39 win over North Butler.

West Fork completes season sweep of North Butler

SHEFFIELD – Less pressure from West Fork resulted in a closer score, but the Warhawks completed the Top of Iowa East Conference girls’ season sweep with a 49-34 win over North Butler on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Part of the reason for pulling off the full-court pressure that smothered the Bearcats in a 24-point loss the first meeting at Greene was the fact that the Warhawks were missing the first person off their bench in Rylie Akins.

GREENE – Seeing their first action in two weeks, West Fork took a little while to get into rhythm, but once the Warhawks did, they solidified a 58-34 Top of Iowa East Conference win over North Butler on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Emma Martinek’s game-high 24 points helped bolster coach Rodney Huber’s team as the Warhawks improved to 5-3 overall, 4-2 TIC.

Bulldogs overwhelm North Butler girls

HAMPTON – It’s been a struggle in the early going for North Butler’s girls’ basketball team.

And, the Bulldogs, coming off their first loss of the season, were a determined group in a game that was less than pretty as the home team emerged with a 55-29 non-conference victory on Thursday, Dec. 10.

Lauren Meader scored a game-high 21 points and Avery Hanson added 18 as coach Miranda Valley’s squad improved to 2-1 overall.

North Butler uses previous day’s loss to earn win over West Fork

SHEFFIELD – Facing a similar press break from the previous night against Class 1A No. 9 Clarksville, the North Butler girls’ basketball team was able to handle West Fork to take a 43-29 victory over the Warhawks and improve to 4-6 overall, 3-4 in the Top of Iowa East Conference.

The Bearcats also shot the ball well, something West Fork’s girls have not been doing, helping to turn a 23-21 deficit into a 30-23 lead entering the fourth quarter.

It was North Butler’s first win over West Fork since the 2013-14 season when the Bearcats went 19-2.

Bulldogs force multiple turnovers to top Bearcats

HAMPTON — North Butler had just pulled to within a pair of points (28-26) early in the second half of this non-conference tilt against the Bulldog girls’ basketball team.

From there, coach Miranda Valley’s squad answered, forced four straight turnovers and in just a little more than three minutes’ time, had a 42-26 lead.

The Bulldogs went on to extend its run to 23 points before North Butler could answer in the eventual 67-37 win at Hampton.
