Season ends for Bulldog boys

ALGONA – The visiting Bulldogs in this Class 3A Sub-state 2 boys’ basketball game was rolling right along with a 29-25 third quarter lead over Algona when senior forward Drew Uhlenhopp went down with an ankle injury.

All of the air that coach Heath Walton’s team had in it seemed to go out and the home Bulldogs went on a run to lead 35-29 and then went on to take the post-season game, 60-50, on Monday, Feb. 24.

Bulldogs still in hunt for share of NCC title after OT win over Algona

HAMPTON — Strong defense in the final five minutes of the game helped to propel the No. 15-rated (in Class 3A) Hampton-Dumont/CAL girls to a 48-46 North Central Conference overtime basketball win over the Algona Bulldogs Friday.

Hampton-Dumont/CAL took an 11-2 conference and a 17-2 overall slate into Tuesday’s showdown at No. 4 Clear Lake. The Lions were 12-1 in league play going into Tuesday’s game and were seeking to wrap up sole possession of the NCC title. Algona fell to 8-5 in the league and 11-8 overall.

Visitors win battle of the Bulldogs

HAMPTON — Keyed by a big fourth quarter from senior Wyatt Wegener, the Algona boys downed Hampton-Dumont/CAL, 56-50, in Friday night’s North Central Conference basketball battle of the Bulldogs.

Algona maintained its hold on second place in the league standings at 9-2 and raised its overall record to 13-3. Hampton-Dumont/CAL slipped to 1-11 in the conference and 3-14 overall.

Wegener finished with 30 points on the night for the winners. Jason Cecil collected 12.
