Hames approaches milestone in loss

ACKLEY — With senior Alyssa Hames needing 22 points to reach 1,000 for her career before the Cougars’ North Iowa Cedar League West game against West Marshall, the pressure was on.

The result was a lot of forced shots that wouldn’t go and West Marshall’s stout defense led to a 36-29 win for the visiting Lady Trojans on Friday, Jan. 22.

Gerbracht reacts to IHSAA decision

ACKLEY – AGWSR head wrestling coach Chad Gerbracht knows that things were going to change this year in regards to the state wrestling tournament; that was a given.

He had heard about the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s decision to keep the format the same despite some leaked information about changing it the week previous.

“I’m glad that we’re still wrestling three days and not rushing everything into one day,” coach Gerbracht said. “Five matches in one day is pretty hard on a high school kid.”

Defense the key in No. 15 Cougars’ win

ACKLEY — Class 1A No. 15 AGWSR and its leading scorer Alyssa Hames was able to overcome Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s defense and its triple-teaming in an eventual 48-22 win on Friday, Jan. 8.

ACKLEY — AGWSR mounted a furious fourth quarter rally and held Gladbrook-Reinbeck well below its season average, but the Rebels emerged with a 42-37 win at Ackley on Friday, Jan. 8.

AGWSR survives physicality of West Fork

SHEFFIELD – AGWSR wore down against West Fork’s constant full court press since the Cougars’ bench doesn’t go very deep.

However, coach Laurie Gann’s squad found a way to survive, hitting key free throws down the stretch in an eventual 44-35 non-conference victory at West Fork High School on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Alyssa Hames scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the first half for the Cougars.

Tough opening duals for Bulldogs, AGWSR

ACKLEY – Expecting to be good and actually going out and showing how good you are can be two completely different things.

The Bulldog wrestlers under coach Patrick Hansen learned that with a stunning 40-33 come-from-behind dual loss against non-conference team East Marshall in a triangular hosted by AGWSR.

The Cougars also felt the brunt of the Mustangs tough lineup, dropping the opening dual of the night, 51-27. The finale resulted in a 66-16 win for the Bulldogs over the Cougars.

Junior duo takes over as Bulldogs nip AGWSR

ACKLEY – No doubt about it, the Bulldogs are going to rely on their two experienced starters.

Avery Hanson’s 30 points and Lauren Meader added 20 more points that were just enough to overtake AGWSR in an early-season nail-biter with a 56-53 win for coach Miranda Valley’s squad on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Matching talents with all-state Cougar senior Alyssa Hames, who led AGWSR with 24 points and 10 rebounds, surpassing the career 500 rebound mark, it was a good game of back-and-forth between the ultra-talented trio.

AGWSR rallies back against Bulldogs

ACKLEY – AGWSR started out hot, faded, and then roared back in the fourth quarter to take an opening win over the Bulldog boys’ basketball team on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Coach Ryley Schipper’s Cougars, who just got their coach back in time for the first game after his wife delivered their first baby on Sunday, delivered in a big way in the end for a 51-48 victory.

The Bulldog bench looks different for the first time in years, also, with veteran coach Heath Walton taking this season off as he recovers from a second round of cancer amid COVID-19.

Cougar aces flush Royals

ACKLEY – The AGWSR volleyball team served up a swift start to the postseason with a sweep of Colo-NESCO at AGWSR High School on Monday, Oct. 19.

The Cougars won 25-13, 25-14, 25-8. AGWSR (9-16) advanced in Class 1A Region 3 and hosts Paton-Churdan (10-9) in Ackley today, Oct. 21.

The winner of that game plays again on Monday, Oct. 26 in a regional semifinal, likely against top-seeded Janesville.

Cougars rout Meskwaki in first round

ACKLEY – Playing without its prolific quarterback, Meskwaki seemed helpless at the hands of AGWSR in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs on Friday, Oct. 16.

Jaden Penning rushed for four touchdowns – three in the first quarter alone – and added another 63-yard touchdown catch from Bo Gerbracht which was also in the first 12 minutes as the Cougars steamrolled their way to a 74-14 win over the Warriors.
