Roger “Butch” Grummer
Roger “Butch” Grummer, 82, of Latimer, passed away with family by his side on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota. Visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2024, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the church. Following the service, Butch was laid to rest at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer. Woodley Funeral Home of Hampton cared for Butch and his family.
Roger Edward Grummer was born September 27, 1942, in Hampton, son of Lewis and Mildred (Immermann) Grummer. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer on November 1, 1942, and confirmed there on March 25, 1956. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School before graduating from Franklin Consolidated. On July 22, 1967, Butch was united in marriage to Joyce Deam with his grandfather, Rev. Edward Grummer, officiating at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. To this union, a son and daughter were born.
Butch was owner and operator of Grummer’s Standard Station in Latimer, where he became a cherished figure in the community, known for filling up vehicles, washing windows, and delighting children with Dum-Dum lollipops. His dedication extended beyond his business; he faithfully served on the Latimer Fire Department for many years and was an active lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those around him.
Butch was an avid outdoorsman. You could find him bird watching, gardening, camping and picnicking. He dedicated a significant amount of time to hunting, trapping, and fishing, leading to many delightful fish fries shared with family and friends. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, he loved to dance and took great pride in cheering on his grandchildren as they engaged in their various activities.
Butch is survived by his wife Joyce Grummer of Latimer; son Ryan (Lori) Grummer of Garner; daughter Shelly (Deon) Juhl of Latimer; grandchildren: Nick Grummer, Derek (Allison) Juhl, Parker Juhl, Trey Grummer and Ella Grummer; great-grandchildren: Matthew and Lydia Juhl and one more on the way; sisters Karen Buelow of West Des Moines and Kay (Gary) Sheppard of Hampton; sister-in-law Jan Grummer of Ventura; brother-in-law Charles (Holly) Deam of Springville; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Larry Grummer and brother-in-law Rev. Albert Buelow.
