With the season around the halfway mark, the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs girls golf team head coach Dustin Moorehead has said the season has been a positive one so far. The Bulldogs are 4-3 on the season.

“One of the really neat parts of the season is we are 3-0 in conference play,” Moorehead said. “The win and loss record is really good but I never really like to judge my season off of that. We have had plenty of girls shoot some personal lows for their nine-hole score. So that has been a positive.”

Moorehead said that there is a lot of positivity around the Bulldogs with how they are doing so far. It is the fifth year as the head coach for Moorehead and he said that he has seen the seniors on the team grow and that this season that the team’s comradery.

“We have some seniors taking some leadership roles and are helping with the handful of freshmen we have this year who are learning a tremendous amount every day,” Moorehead said. “It has been a fun year to see them grow personally and see them grow on the golf course.

In their most recent meet, the Bulldogs defeated the Humboldt Wildcats 198-209 on April 23. Madison Lindaman took first place with a score of 47, Trinity Swart finished in a tie for second place with a score of 48, Kenzie Moorehead took fourth place with a score of 49, Kenley Hansen finished in a tie for sixth place with a score of 54, Zoe Erdman and Rayne Wagner finished in a tie for 11th place with a score of 63.

A positive of the season so far for Moorehead is how the seniors have played so far. I have four seniors on my starting six spots and they have grown and down tremendously well,” Moorehead said.

As the season moves along, Moorehead said he would like to see the team do better at their home course.

“So far we have not played our best golf at our home course which is kind of weird because usually you get the home field advantage but this year it has not worked that way so far,” Moorehead said. “So I am looking for Tuesday to hopefully be a big swinging point for us and to go in there with some confidence. We are on our home course playing two good conference teams and I would like to see us compete and walk away with one or two conference wins on Tuesday.”

Moorehead said that there have been other golfers who have done well for the team so far aside from the four seniors.

“Kenzie Moorehead, my daughter who has had great success already and we have had a nice surprise this year with one of our freshmen in Kenley Hansen, who started off really nervous and I coached her into having the confidence she has had in the last couple of varsity meets for us,” Moorehead said. “Her scores have counted the last couple of meets which has been a great surprise and a great benefit for the team and you can just see her grow.”

Moorehead said that one of the main messages he has shared with the Bulldogs so far this year is to have a short memory if they struggle.

“Everybody is going to have a bad hole so you have to forget that bad hole and that bad shot and you have to come back strong on the next hole and on the next shot,” Moorehead said. “So forget about it, move on from it, and make the next shot count.”

The team’s next meet is on May 6 at the North Central Conference Girls Golf Tournament at Cedar Pointe Golf Course at 10 a.m.
