While the weather might not be cooperating but that has not stopped the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs girls golf team from getting ready for the upcoming season. Head coach Dustin Moorehead said that one of the goals for the team is to improve from last year. Moorehead also said that another goal is to not be so stressful on the course and to limit three puts.

“Last year we competed towards the middle of the conference and we ended up in regionals doing pretty well,” Moorehead said. “I think our goal is to be above .500 in the conference or more and try to finish in the upper part of the regional like we did last year.”

The team has 15 girls on the roster this year and five golfers returning from last year. Moorehead said that the team is working on filling the sixth spot for the varsity team and that the team has six freshmen coming in this year.

“A lot of our girls that are going to be on varsity experienced a lot last year,” Moorehead said. “They know what they are getting into and so it is just about going out there and being confident and making some good swings and some good scores.”

Heading into the early part of the season, Moorehead said he would like to see the Bulldogs focus on staying focused and staying positive.

“If you have a bad hole, brush it off and go on to the next one,” Moorehead said. “We want to eliminate as many high scores as we can and try to eliminate the three puts. With more experience this year and so hopefully we have less of the younger mistakes.”

Moorehead said there are multiple golfers who can have a big year for the Bulldogs this season.

“Trinity Swart and Madison Lindaman who are both seniors and have been on varsity for multiple years,” Moorehead said. “They have a lot of experience and I hope they can stay positive and help the younger girls. You have Kenzie Moorehead and Rayne Wagner who have been around working on the positivity and want to help each other. Ava Abernathy came a long way last year going from her first year where she was not seeing much of the golf course to last year where she played quite a bit. She might not hit it the longest but she hits it straight and makes minimal mistakes.”

As the season moves along, Moorehead said he would like to see the Bulldogs to compete after they get the jitters out during the early parts of the season.

“I think we can compete with most people in the conference this year with the experience we have coming back and the experience other teams have lost. I want them to buckle down and for them to know that we can do it and have that confidence to do it.”

The team’s next meet is at Ridge Stone Golf Club against West Fork on April 9 at 4:15 p.m.
