Warhawks girls wrestling earns first win

SHEFFIELD—- The West Fork and Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls wrestling team won their dual meet against BCLUW/SH 30-24 on Dec. 5 during the team’s Senior Night. Head coach Onni Prestidge said it was the first team win in the team’s history. The team also went up against North Central but fell to North Central 42-30.
In the dual meet against BCLUW/SH, in the 115-lbs weight class Teaghan Bird, the team’s lone senior won, Preslee Dickman won in the 125-lbs weight class, Jenny Ramirez won in the 155-lbs weight class. Frenanda Ramirez won in the 170-lbs weight class and Maren Subbert won in the 190-lbs weight class.
In the dual meet against North Central, Bird won in the 115-lbs weight class, Dickman won in the 125-lbs weight class, Jenny Ramirez won in the 155-lbs weight class, Frenanda Ramirez won in the 170-lbs weight class, and Subbert won in the 235-lbs weight class.
Prestidge said that the team met their opponents blow for blow.
Getting the win meant a lot for the wrestlers especially with it being in front of the home crowd.
“Yesterday was one of my most memorable meets because we made history that night,” Jenny Ramirez said. “Lots of emotions from the wrestlers were shown and we all truly appreciated all the supporters who came to watch us.”
“It went great,” Dickman said. “We all showed up and wrestled amazingly for our home event.
”What an amazing night to remember. I am super proud of the girls for putting up a show for our supporters,” Frenanda Ramirez said. “I am incredibly thankful to those who came and watched us. Your cheers and encouragement truly made it an unforgettable night.”
Prestidge said that the meet was a true showing of teamwork.
“We have a small team yet every girl was there for the others win or lose,” Prestidge said. “The bench was loud on every movement.”
Prestidge said that another positive he saw was how aggressive the wrestlers were on the mat.
“No one gave an inch and demanded the center of the mat,” Prestidge said.
Being coachable is something that Prestidge said he thinks the team can take away from the meet.
“The biggest thing moving forward will be taking the small changes in position and being coachable,” Prestidge said. “Many times you can only hear about 10 percent of what the coach is yelling from the corner. Tonight our girls were listening and being truly coachable while competing.”
