Lynn Depping, 76

Lynn Dean Depping, 76, of Madrid passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 4, at the Iles Sundberg Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m, Tuesday, December 5th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madrid with a luncheon to follow. Burial will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 2 pm.

Lynn, the son of Henry and Leone (Finkle) Depping was born February 27, 1947 in Hampton, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Latimer, Iowa and graduated from CAL Community High School in 1965. Following graduation, Lynn attended the Universal Trade School (Omaha) graduating with a degree in Automobile Mechanics in 1966. Then he attended Northern Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. He enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and was later stationed in the Philippines for active duty.

Lynn was united in marriage to Elaine Ohm on June 14, 1970, in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Lynn and Elaine were blessed with two children: Michael and Julie. They lived in Des Moines and Elkhart before settling in Madrid in 1977. Lynn retired from the Navy Seabees in 1993 with the rank of CMC Petty Officer after serving 27 years. He retired from his civilian job at Camp Dodge in 2006.

Lynn was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed traveling, wintering in Quartzsite, Arizona for the last 16 years. He enjoyed fishing and camping. He loved cars, tractors, and anything he could take apart. Lynn will be remembered for his service to others. He was a member of Madrid Lions Club and would show up any time there was a project at the church, park, or someone else’s house, as well as many projects at home, though he usually got to these last. He is most remembered, though, for how much he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, which would include everyone he had ever met even if only one time.

Lynn is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elaine of Madrid, his children Michael(Robyn) Depping and Julie(Tim) Shannon of Madrid; five grandchildren: Sierra(Michael) Wessels, Ava and Layna Depping, Cole and Taylor Shannon, great-grandson Julien Dean Wessels, and one sister Kay Meek of Wisconsin. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Madrid Lions Club. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.
