Bulldog soccer team sweeps W-SR Tournament foes
The Hampton-Dumont boys’ soccer squad has come a long way under coach Danielle Arana, but still has some distance to go before finishing the season. Going into Saturday the Bulldogs still had at least four games to play, two games in the Waverly tournament Saturday, one against Sumner-Fredericksburg and another against Waverly Shell Rock Go-Hawks, and two more matchups this week, May 8 against Webster City and May 12 against Clear Lake. District games will follow, though pairings have not been announced.
Arana took her Bulldogs to Waverly-Shell Rock’s soccer tournament last Saturday to test their skills and that they did against the Go-Hawks, a bigger and faster team.
The Bulldogs started off the day with two quick goals as senior Alex Hernandez and sophomore Fernando Mota both put the ball in the net once each in the first 12 minutes of play.
Their efforts helped H-D-CAL take a 2-0 lead to halftime an advantage the Bulldogs maintained for the first 13 minutes of the second half. The the Go-Hawks, however, went down kicking, with Derek Bienemann moving the ball past H-D CAL’s defense to bring the game to 2-1. Ultimately, the Go-Hawks could not put another goal on the board before the horn sounded, so the game’s final score was 2-1 for the Bulldogs.
Last week heading into the weekend the Bulldogs were sitting 7-3, and after battling through ultimately came out of it 9-3, with a massive 10-0 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg, a game that ended via the 10-goal mercy rule in the second half.
The wins over Sumner-Fredericksburg and Waverly-Shell Rock improved the Bulldog record to 9-3 overall, 6-2 in North Central Conference play.
Monday’s matchup against the Webster City Lynx’s 9-1 record would prove more of a challenge though, with the HDC getting a goal on the board in the first half, but stalling out as Webster city matched that one goal in the first and added two more, repeating that performance to come away with a 6-1 win. That loss puts the Bulldogs at 9-4 going into their last regular season game.
The Bulldogs will now go up against Clear Lake who sits at 7-5 in a home game scheduled for May 12 at 7:30 p.m. on the Dogs’ home turf.
