West Fork girls sweep Newman Catholic, go 1-2 at Belmond-Klemme Tourney
Even keel is better than nothing.
The West Fork volleyball team won two and lost two this past week, starting with a sweep over Newman Catholic of Mason City on Sept. 7 at the West Fork High School Gymnasium in Sheffield.
The Warhawks ran into a little trouble to start the day at the Belmond-Klemme Tournament, held this past Saturday in Belmond, falling to Iowa Falls-Alden before coming up just short of an upset over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura. West Fork recovered by the final match, putting the brooms to West Hancock to end the weekend with a high note.
Following a full week of matches, the Warhawks shifted to 4-6 overall with a 2-1 record within the Top of Iowa Conference-East.
The Warhawks started this week with a Top of Iowa-East tilt with St. Ansgar, which took place this past Tuesday at the West Fork High School Gymnasium in Sheffield. This weekend, West Fork will compete at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. on the campus of Nashua-Plainfield High School in Nashua.

West Fork 3, Newman Catholic 0: Starting things up right after the Labor Day holiday, the Warhawks crept closer to the .500 mark with a sweep over a winless Knights squad in a Top of Iowa Conference-East matchup held on Sept. 7 at the West Fork High School Gym in Sheffield.
West Fork held on to a 25-23 victory in the first set, before completing the sweep with a 25-20 win in the second set and a resounding 25-11 victory in the third set.
Sophomore Kaylie Lundt paced West Fork with eight assists, five service aces, three digs, one kill, while senior Kalli Trewin accumulated four digs, three aces, two kills and one block.
Junior Emma Martinek amassed three kills, one assist and one block, followed by senior Madisyn Bonner’s four kills and sophomore Breckyn Dickman’s seven digs and two aces. Senior Maddie Hubka recorded seven digs and two aces, alongside junior Ellie Weaver’s three aces and one dig.
Senior Haley Grady came away with three digs and one ace, followed by senior Mya Braun’s two kills and junior Keelee Sheriff’s one kill.
Iowa Falls-Alden 2, West Fork 0: The Warhawks put up a fight early on, but succumbed to a setback at the hands of the Cadets in West Fork’s first match at the Belmond-Klemme Tournament, which took place this past Saturday on the campus of Belmond-Klemme High School in Belmond.
The Cadets outlasted the Warhawks, 24-22, in the first set, before handing West Fork a 21-9 loss to take the match.
Hubka led West Fork with six digs, as Lundt chipped in with four assists. Martinek came out with one kill and one block, alongside Grady’s one ace and one dig.
Sheriff, Trewin and Bonner each posted one kill against Iowa Falls-Alden.
Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 2, West Fork 1: In a closely contested battle, the Warhawks succumbed to a rally from the Cardinals at the Belmond-Klemme Tournament, which took place this past Saturday on the campus of Belmond-Klemme High School in Belmond.
West Fork started off the match with a 23-21 victory, but fell in a 21-14 result against the Cardinals, which prompted the tiebreaking set. The Warhawks almost took the victory, but left empty handed with a 15-13 loss.
Trewin had a solid performance against GHV, compiling three kills, two service aces, one block and one dig, along with Martinek’s seven kills and Hubka’s 12 digs and one assist.
Sophomore Kaylie Lundt was multidimensional with nine assists, seven digs and one ace, as Dickman racked up nine digs and Grady totaled seven digs.
Bonner left the match with four kills and one dig, and Sheriff acquired one kill and one block.
Sophomore Mallery Meier contributed with four digs, and Braun rounded out the stats sheet with one kill.
West Fork 2, West Hancock 0: Following their match against GHV, the Warhawks used that momentum to their advantage, cruising past the Eagles in their final match at the Belmond-Klemme Tournament, which took place this past Saturday on the campus of Belmond-Klemme High School in Belmond.
The Warhawks returned to the win column with scores of 21-8 and 21-12.
Trewin put up numbers in multiple categories, tallying two service aces, two blocks, one kill and one dig. Dickman recorded three aces and three digs, while Bonner contributed with three kills and one block
Lundt had a solid showing, with three assists, one block and one dig, while Martinek put together three kills and one block. Hubka logged three digs, followed by one kill from Braun, one ace from Meier and one dig from Grady.
