Coulter celebrates dedication of Franklin County Freedom Rock

For about 20 minutes on Saturday, the action at Coulter Fun Day settled to honor those who served in the United States Military and acknowledge a new piece of Coulter history.
The American Legion Riders on Saturday morning hosted a dedication for the Franklin County Freedom Rock, painted by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen last fall. The rock depicts several scenes from Franklin County’s military history, including the GAR Hall, Admiral William Leahy and the American Legion Riders.
A sizeable crowd gathered around the rock, which sits off the Rolling Prairie Trail by the cemetery, to hear a little more about how it came to be in the county. The county in 2014 received approval to have the rock established and painted in Coulter and about a year later, they found the rock. Marin Marietta, of Mason City, donated the rock and Dave’s Crane, from Union, moved the rock to Coulter.
From there, countless individuals and organizations donated materials and money to see the process through. The effort received everything from heat and energy in the tent while Sorensen worked on the rock to funds that helped construct the landscape around the rock.
