Winter won’t leave soon, so make it comfortable

Editorial: The last month or so of winter has been a bear, to say the least.
Fortunately, Punxsutawney Phil predicted that we’ll see spring soon. Unfortunately for us, though, unlike actual bears, we can’t hibernate for the rest of the winter and if this week is any indication so far, winter won’t go out without a fight.
While we wait for winter’s exit, it’s important to continue to be safe as it’s almost a certainty that we haven’t heard “a winter storm warning has been issued” for the last time.
Law enforcement and other safety officials encourage motorists to use strong caution when venturing out after those warnings have been put into effect. First and foremost, if you don’t have to leave the house, don’t. But if a trip is a must, leave plenty of time to get from Point A to Point B safely and make sure vehicles are packed with extra clothes and supplies such as blankets, water and cell phone chargers in the event of a break down or accident.
Also, leave plenty of distance between vehicles, drive at an appropriate speed and always remember to not crowd the plow.
Back home, clear sidewalks in a timely manner as people still use those even though conditions tell us to stay inside. A homeowner is responsible for making sure sidewalks are not slick and snow covered and can be liable should an injury occur.
We all, well, most of us, are ready for winter to grab its coat and get out but unfortunately, it’s going to continue to crash our party rent free for the foreseeable future. The best we can do is to grin and bear it and make sure we’re doing so safely until spring’s sweet release finally arrives.
